COOS BAY — She started as a student at Blossom Gulch Elementary School decades ago. On Monday, Linda Prefontaine returned as a benefactor. She was fulfilling a promise made to the students a year ago.
Prefontaine co-authored a book on her famous brother, the late great runner Steve Prefontaine. Sales from the book, “Steve Prefontaine: Rocketman,” will pay for music, arts and athletic programs at the school.
Brother and sister both attended the school as youngsters growing up in Coos Bay.
During the program on Monday, Prefontaine told the youngsters that book sales generated enough money to donate $3,892 to help their school. It has paid for physical education equipment, an art teacher from the Coos Art Museum to teach classes, helping the childrens’ choir, and the Healthy Laps program, where students walked or ran as many laps as they could around the school’s track.
Nurse Angie Webster said Prefontaine has asked that book royalties go into the music, arts and physical education programs.
