The U.S. Coast Guard is taking comments on proposed rules to restrict or close river bars, and it wants to hear from local residents.
The agency will hold a public meeting from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, at The Red Lion Hotel, 1313 N. Bayshore Drive, Coos Bay, to hear what people think.
The proposal would create "regulated navigation areas" covering Oregon's river bars. It would establish procedures to close bars and require additional safety measures, such as life jacket wearing or availability for recreational and small commercial vessels during hazardous conditions.
According to the Federal Register, the Coast Guard is proposing the new rules in light of recent vessel capsizings in the region. There have been 39 capsizings since 1992, resulting in 66 deaths.
Comments will be taken until June 30. They can be sent to Federal eRulemaking portal at
http://www.regulations.gov or faxed to (202)493-2251, or mailed to Docket Management Facility (M-30), U.S. Department of Transportation, West Building Ground Floor, Room W12-140, 1200 New Jersey Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C., 20590-0001.
