Bus drivers win honors for keeping kids safe on roads

Imagine driving 500,000 miles without an accident. Make it 39 years, too.
That’s the blemish-free driving record South Coast Head Start’s bus drivers have achieved, according to a press release. The agency’s drivers will be featured in a national publication on child safety and have safely transported local students throughout Coos and Curry counties to gain fame.
Drivers who helped include:
• Janice Coonfare: 16 years.
• Sandy Coons: 13 years.
• Smokey Hughes: 21 years.
• Rebecca Jennings: 11 years.
• Lisa Lea: 11 years.
• Debbie Mangine: 10 years.
• Felicitas Sanchez: 12 years.
• Kendra McCasland: 18 years.
• Peggy Stanger: 12 years.
• Debbie Shield: 18 years.
• Don Todd: 8 years.
• Shannon Warner: 12 years.
• Fred Strain: 39 years.
South Coast Head Start, a program of Oregon Coast Community Action, provides preschool education to children in need on the South Coast. The program includes 10 sites throughout Coos and Curry counties, with a classroom in Myrtle Point that serves both Myrtle Point and Coquille students. The program also provides family activities and educational opportunities.
Entz finishes education administration degree
Julie Entz of North Bend received a master’s degree in education May 2 in education administration from Concordia University in Portland.
Delimont finishes work toward bachelor’s degree
Nicole Delimont of North Bend received a bachelor of science degree in human nutrition from Kansas State University.
Delimont graduated from North Bend High School in 2006.
