I want to know
Question: I want to know where the name Kentuck comes from?
Answer: The slough that feeds into Coos Bay several miles east of Glasgow was named after a Kentucky native who settled on the waterway in the pioneer days. According to the Oregon Geographic Names, in about 1860, George W. Thomas had a contract to furnish elk meat to Charles Merchant for the North Bend mill. But the slough avoided the more generic name of Thomas thanks to locals' use of the pioneer's nickname, Kentuck.
The name has been adopted by the nearby Kentuck Golf Course, which recently signed an option to sell part or all the property to Jordan Cove Energy Project. For now, the course is still open to golfers.
