SALEM (AP) - The Oregon House on Wednesday endorsed a 6-cent-a-gallon gasoline tax increase to help pay for a transportation package that's expected to create thousands of jobs in the midst of Oregon's deep recession.

The $300 million-a-year package, which cleared the House on a 38-22 vote, also contains increases in registration, title and license plate fees to pay for new road and road-widening projects around Oregon. Backers said the package will sustain 4,600 jobs each year, or about 40,000 total over the next decade.

Under the House plan, registration fees will increase $16 per year while title fees will increase $22 and drivers will pay a $10 surcharge for each license plate they buy.

Those increases will bring in $300 million worth of new revenue each year, which will be split among the state, counties and cities.

Counties will get just under $82 million and cities about $55 million. The state will get the remaining money, which will go for road maintenance and preservation, and bonding to help pay for 37 large, longer-term projects.

Although Democrats hold 36 seats in the 60-member House - the "supermajority" needed to pass tax hikes in the chamber - the bill drew support from seven Republican members while five Democrats voted against it.

One of the Democratic 'no' votes came from House Majority Leader Mary Nolan of Portland.

Her spokesman, Michael Cox, said Nolan knew the package had enough support to pass and cast a symbolic Ôno' vote to show her concerns that the package is heavily weighted toward big highway projects and could been tilted a little more toward "green" transportation programs.

Oregon really is mostly Republican, geography wise, if you look at the voting trend maps of the last few years. It's only a couple of places that are Democrat- the counties that Portland is in, Corvallis and Eugene. But that's where the population is...

You people are full of so much hypocrisy. You will complain about higher taxes to fund the roads. Or you will complain about the roads not being funded or "how Democrats don't create jobs."

Tsunami, I agree with you that the people should get to vote on tax measures. However, most people in Oregon are Democrats, so you would STILL lose.

I'm curious as to why you people even live in Oregon/ Pacific NW in the first place, it has been this way forever. I suggest moving away to a heavily Republican southern state complete with crumbling infrastructure and lower taxes.

Also, maybe it's time to get off your arse and go for a walk or bike ride instead of driving your gas-guzzler everywhere. No wonder so many Americans are obese.

By the way, I'm not a Democrat nor am I for this bill. I just cringe when I read so much unfounded, uneducated ranting which makes any point you think you have invalid.

To CBPrezident: Great post. I couldn't agree more. I am also not an economist but would suspect this is even worse than a sales tax. Do you suppose this will hurt any of the politicians pocketbooks? We all know the answer to that one. Meanwhile back on the farm the gas prices just keep going up. I wonder if the politicians have EVER considered doing something about that?

For a state that supposedly has no sales tax,We the people are getting the shaft. We the people here on the southcoast are going to get it worse as we all pay higher gas prices than anywhere else in this state. If this sales tax(gas tax) is going to work fairly then the price of gas has to be the same across the state YES/NO?

To Trucker & Swede: This is a good state in the long run, & running away never seems to work in the long run, what we need to do is hang in there & get rid of what they call "Our Leaders", they are not native Oregonians & they are only concerned with their own well being, "Tax & Spend" has long been the War Cry of Democrats.

If we can't pay our rent & buy groceries now, let alone pay for our car insurance & car payment & credit card debt we need to survive on how possibly can we pay for more taxes, those Democrats are letting the people down again, I hope their kids are in as big a mess as mine........

I have nothing positive to say. This is a tax increase where there doesn't need to be one. I want these liars to hand over to us an honest accounting of all the transportation related taxes, fines, and fees, grants, and other funds. Where is this money going? Is the road tax being used to improve our roads or is it going into the general fund or toward something that would not be supported by the majority of Oregon voters?

we are rapidly going the way of california. i wonder why?

czbymom wrote on May 28, 2009 12:42 PM:

I agree with Swede. I've had enough of the taxes imposed on us. Enough is enough!! We are going to be tax poor if not already. That's what we get for voting in those idiots. I'm leaving the country completely...no more US crap. It's all gone to hell in a handbag when Obama come onboard.

tsunami wrote on May 28, 2009 12:04 PM:

this is just another example of democrats kicking us while we're down. we need a constitutional amendment so that the people can vote on tax measures.

Swede wrote on May 28, 2009 11:29 AM:

Sorry folks i've had it with the taxes in Oregon. Goodbye i'm off to Montana. It will never quit because they will NEVER GET ENOUGH.
