Skate park donors are due recognition

I was on the CBAY board of directors for almost two years. It disgusts me how everything that we have promised the contributing businesses is not happening. Menasha and the Coquille Indian Tribe were both huge donors to the skate park and they also were promised their names would be displayed on a wall at the park, recognizing them as donors.

Does anyone in this town have any idea who donated the money to build the park, except for the $80,000 the city was “forced” to “donate?” I don’t anymore. I am pretty sure the donors would like to be recognized.

So, to every donor that the skate park has ever had, I do extend my deepest apologies to you for not receiving what you have been promised. As you may be able to tell, CBAY raised the most amount of money with its first phase of the board of directors. Nancy Kramer, Cathi Thompson, myself, Tristen Reasor and Christina Owen. Only one of those people was invited to the ribbon cutting ceremony on May 22, and that was Christina Owen. To me that does not seem right. But I guess we can let bygones be bygones. At least we have a skate park. But after no sponsor recognition, we can kiss the next phases goodbye.

I am sure Menasha and the Coquille Indian Tribe, are not losing sleep over this. They are both great contributors to our community. All you are doing Eugene is creating some bad press for those companies. Your making it sound like they are the one complaining. Are they? You think they would be so petty as to "complain" because they have not got "formal thank you's", I dont think so. They both see the big picture. They see the kids enjoying the park. I wish I were 30 years younger, I may be skateboarding with them!!

If a plaque doesn't need to be placed at the new skatepark then we don't need to waste money putting one on the new fire station when that is built either, but we all know the City and City Council won't stand for that. Typical Coos Bay politics.

Let's see, my 15 year old grandson went out there day after day and worked his tail off volunteering doing grunt work. How 'bout a big ol sign out there with his name on it too! LOL!

Do us all a favor & do not offer to be a brain donor, an egg donor or a sperm donor. We have all witnessed what your donoring has done for the community & quite frankly we can't afford the consequences of it. The taxpayer was stuck with the bill for cleaning up your mess. You want recognition? Go get a can of spray paint & put your name all over it. Philanthropy is about the cause not your personal billboard to spotlight how wonderfully generous you are. You got your tax deduction & the opportunity to designate where your money was to be spent. If you need more than that then you are simply another classless philanthropic wannabe! As a side note, nobody cares who you are anyway. All we care about is what you are going to give us next. We deserrrve it. Get the picture?

Have you people even gone over to the skate-park and watched the kids? It is a great thing to see children hanging out again enjoying a sport that binds them together. I bet if you poll those kids down there, they would all give you a resounding THANK YOU. That in itself should be enough thanks. Finally we have another (one of the few) places where a kid can hang out. Cool part is, adults wont use this, its only for the kids. *smiles*

Let's not forget about the money donated by the Tony Hawk Foundation to support the building of this park.

I don't believe that Tony asked to have his name on a wall... but he did ask for the construction to be built with certain blue prints. The park as it sits doesn't include HALF the jumps that were promised to get the grant...

I remember this being a huge deal when the park was still just an idea... but apparently, the city has ZERO regard for ANY of it's donors...

Last word was, this park wont be getting any more of the Tony Hawk Foundation's money... and rightfully so. Congratulations to the City of Coos Bay - you really messed this one up!!!

Your the one that doesn't get it. A company and an organization donated a very large amount of money and they were both promised that their names would be placed on a wall at the skatepark. The City and City Council has let these people down, not the volunteers. The volunteers are standing up for what is right which is keeping their word. I am not going to pay for this, it is something the city should have done but they decide to let the contractor do what he pleased. If you knew anything you would know this park wasn't built by the original plans either.

I think you both have missed my point. I don't care if $1.00 of my tax paying money went to this, I will never use it and neither of you inputted thousands of your own dollars into this project either. Its the old "give em and inch and they take a mile".. Bunch of ingrates and if you ask me I would have much rather had my tax dollars fill the hole up with dirt and plant a flower. It is never enough for you "takers" and you call yourselves volunteers.. It always comes with a price.

hey its me wrote on May 29, 2009 11:10 AM:

I agree with this letter. The biggest mistake that was made was CBAY turning the money over to the city. If CBAY had been able to do this project all on their own this wouldn't have happened. It's a big slap in the face and city officials and the city council don't care or they wouldn't have let this happen. Everyone was at the council meeting a few years back when this was discussed. Maybe it's time to recall some council members and fire some city officials.

IamTheMan wrote on May 28, 2009 11:13 PM:

Yes, you are very right. But having to give every single taxpayer a pat on the back is quite unreasonable. Think, did you pay $10,000 to go directly to the skatepark? I don't think so. Lets just hope something happens.

hey its me wrote on May 28, 2009 10:13 AM:

It's big slap in the face that all of the car washes don't mean anything now and what about the design. This is not what was agreed on. The flat section of old tennis court doesn't cut it. Where are the rails and stairs? It could have at least been painted or had some type of coating put on it. It looks like #%$@ when you look at other new skateparks. This park was suppose to be for all level skaters. We got screwed because the city had their eyes closed and that's why they had to pay to finish it. Your right there won't be anymore skatepark projects. And yes, you've lost my support.

Action Jackson wrote on May 28, 2009 7:15 AM:

Well as a matter of fact if we are asking for pats on the back lets see where mine is? I am a tax payer and if the City paid over 80,000.00 towards a skate park that I will never use I sure do want someone to say thank you to me too. This whole thing turned into a fiasco thanks to the volunteers so please let it go. Enjoy what you have.
