A Knife River Materials paving crew puts down a layer of asphalt on one of the taxiways at the Southwestern Oregon Regional Airport on Wednesday afternoon. The company has been working on the project all week alongside runway 4-22 near the new terminal building. This third phase of the work is being done with funds from the federal stimulus package legislation grant of almost $1.3 million. Taxiway C was relocated a little farther away from the runway.

The federal government is plunking down $1.3 million in stimulus dollars to provide additional funding for the relocation of Taxiway C at the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport.
The money rounds out funds for the $10 million project in its third year of construction. The old taxiway didn’t meet Federal Aviation Administration design standards for larger aircraft, such as Boeing 757s, according to airport Executive Director Gary LeTellier. The district hopes the airport will provide scheduled commercial service on larger aircraft sometime in the future.
At an airport board meeting this week, commissioners also accepted $324,621 in Federal Aviation Airport Improvement Fund money, LeTellier said. They also heard an update on the April SkyWest Airlines performance, showing there were 31 percent fewer tickets sold than a year ago. However, the number of passengers is increasing with the summer months coming. The flights between North Bend and Portland were 52 percent filled, while the San Francisco aircraft were 70 percent filled. Aircraft operations in general were 6 percent lower than in April 2008.
In other business, LeTellier said the airport no longer employs public relations specialist Matt Jarvis effective May 31. The district has opted to seek proposals from a variety public relations firms and individuals for part-time help.
“There were some issues that we all weren’t quite comfortable with, that are no reflection on Matt’s abilities,” LeTellier said.
LeTellier has plans to retire in December and the board has scheduled a meeting for 7 p.m. June 2 to discuss and take public input on what the requirements should be for a new executive director.

Another build and they will come project. Trouble is it benefits a limited few persons. Less than 1 % of the persons in this county. Then were all on the hook to pay the money back. Just remember all the stimulus money is a loan on our future, money you would not borrow for yourself. That money would better suit us all by overlaying Highway 101 between Newmark and Timber inn, (motel 8 to be). That road, most travelled in the County is a 3rd world surface.
Oh I just KNOW with just a few more of YOUR millions, they'll git this project off the ground.
Just be patient and send us more cash.
And just WHAT pray tell will that look like?
You going to have employees?
You going to have flights?
You going to stop spending our money on empty seats so you can continue to pretend you aren't sitting on top of the biggest boon-doggle this county has ever seen?
What , pray tell will "success" look like, and how long will you need to be financed by the people who cannot afford to use it?
And where are these 757's coming from?
Good timing World, after the election. You be good at that.
