Parades concerts mark Memorial Day

Reedsport

The Military Order of the Purple Heart will host a barbecue at 4 p.m. Sunday at Reedsport Junior/Senior High School, 2260 Longwood Dr., and U.S. Marine Corps Band concert at 7 p.m. in the Pacific Auditorium at Reedsport High School.

Tickets are required in advance and may be purchased at the Reedsport Umpqua Bank and Bank of America stores or Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce.

A Memorial Day parade will be held in downtown Reedsport Monday. Businesses, civic organizations and individuals are encouraged to participate. Entry forms are available at the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce.

A children's amusement area across from Hahn Park at 10 a.m. will feature carnival games, an ice cream truck, helicopter rides, a 30-foot slide, a bounce house and additional events.

Winchester Bay

The U.S. Marine Corps Band will perform at noon at Phillip Boe Memorial Park and at 6 p.m. during a barbecue in front of the Sportsmen's Cannery & Smokehouse in Winchester Bay Tuesday.

Coos Bay

The 20th-annual Memorial Day parade will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Coos Bay. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. behind Bi-Mart on Golden Ave. Call 267-4702 or 888-6556 for more information.

Memorial Day services will be held at 10 a.m. at Ocean View Memory Gardens, 1525 Ocean Blvd., and 11 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 63060 Millington Frontage Road, Monday in Coos Bay. American Legion Bay Area Post No. 34 Post Commander Earl Gordon will officiate; Bay Area AMVETS Post No. 10, VFW Empire Post No. 7488 and VFW North Bend Post No. 3182 will assist with flag placement.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. The Rev. Karl Schray of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church will officiate.

North Bend

The North Bend Senior Center will hold a barbecue from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the center, 1470 Airport Lane. Barbecue will include hot dogs, hamburgers, salads and beverages. Cost will be $5. Call 756-7622 for more information.

Charleston

The Blessing of the Fleet will be held at 10 a.m. Monday near the public docks in the Charleston Marina. Call 888-2548 for more information.

Bandon

The Blessing of the Fleet will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday at the Fishermen's Memorial adjacent to the Port of Bandon boardwalk and boat ramp. Following the service, the U.S. Coast Guard will lay flowers on the bar.

Flowers in memory and names of deceased can be left at the Port of Bandon office until 3 p.m. Friday or brought to the service Saturday. The Coast Guard cutter will return to the public docks for tours from 1 to 4 p.m.

Flags from the Veterans Flag Project will be on display Monday at five Bandon cemeteries. A 5-by-9-foot, weather-resistant flag can be purchased for $110, including pole and base installation.

The cost is $55 for those who have their own flag to display. There is a fund to pay for those who have a flag but cannot afford the installation cost. Call 347-7235 for more information.

Coquille

The Coquille VFW Post No. 965 and Auxiliary will hold a flag ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Penny Sturdivant Park. The group will then move to Myrtle Crest Memorial Gardens, the Masons and Odd Fellows cemeteries across from Coquille High School and a historic cemetery off of Sixth Street.

The Coquille VFW also is accepting flags for a flag-burning ceremony.
