Sunset Conference
Bobcats blast Braves
Myrtle Point drilled host Reedsport 14-3 in the Sunset Conference finale, racking up 10 hits and scoring six runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
The contest also was the final game for Reedsport coach Todd Harrington, who said he’s stepping down after nine years as the Braves’ skipper.
“It’s time for someone else to step in and see what they can do,” Harrington said.
Bobcats pitcher Sawyer Wilson pitched a four-hitter in the win with 15 strikeouts and just one walk.
“He was tough,” Harrington said.
Reedsport went through seven pitchers in the loss, beginning with Taylor Palermo, who pitched one inning in his first trip to the mound since an injury nearly a month ago and played his final game as a Brave.
Wilson also went 2-for-4 with two doubles for Myrtle Point, while Jeff Veysey was 2-for-4 with a double.
Reedsport’s Cory Christoffersen had a two-run triple in the sixth inning.
Chieftains top Coquille
Rogue River used one big inning to turn the tide against visiting Coquille for a 17-9 win that set up a showdown with Cascade Christian today for the league title.
The Red Devils scored three runs in both the second and third innings and led 8-5 when Rogue River came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and promptly scored nine times.
Tom Cermak had a home run and picked up the win in relief for the Chieftains. Ryan Dannels had a triple for Coquille.
Rogue River and Cascade Christian share the league lead at 12-1.

Far West League
Lancers top Bruins
South Umpqua edged host Brookings-Harbor 8-7 on Monday, finishing the Far West season 6-9. The young Bruins meanwhile fell to 1-14.
South Umpqua led 6-2 heading into the sixth before Brookings-Harbor manufactured five runs in the inning in a comeback that fell just short.
“It was exciting for the kids,” said Bruins coach Pat Berkowitz.
The Bruins tallied five base hits in the sixth, to match the Lancers’ eight total hits, but Brookings-Harbor was hampered by five errors while South Umpqua played errorless ball.
“They played really clean. If fact they made several dandy plays,” Berkowitz said.
Austin Marsh went 2-for-4 with a double for the Lancers in the win, while Joey La Thorpe also was 2-for-4 with a double for the Bruins. Pat Carper pitched in with a 3-for-5 performance for Brookings-Harbor.
The Bruins were missing two starters due to a personal tragedy.
Siuslaw edges Sutherlin
Siuslaw topped visiting Sutherlin Monday, finishing Far West play 11-4 and shoring up the league’s third playoff spot.
The Vikings earned the win in the sixth when Kevin Strenke hit an RBI single and Siuslaw then took advantage of a relay mishap to score a second run to set the final score at 5-3.
“That proved to be the decisive two runs we needed,” said Vikings coach Jerry Affinito. “We kind of took advantage of a couple mistakes they made.”
Strenke, John Duman and Cody Grimes all had two hits in the game for Siuslaw.
Kyle Jaukkuri went 2-for-4 for the Lancers, who wound up in fifth place at 3-12 on the year.
Siuslaw and Douglas both finished 11-4, but the Trojans hold the tiebreaker.
The Vikings next will face Tillamook in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs at Tillamook on Friday.
“I was pleased,” Affinito said of the win. “We won our last five in a row; I feel like we’re playing our best baseball right now.”

Chieftains win
Rogue River topped visiting Coquille 14-3 in a game that was postponed Friday because of a broken down bus.
