Camp sites open this weekend

U.S. Bureau of Land Management campgrounds and recreation sites open Memorial Day weekend.

The BLM operates 10 campgrounds with 158 campsites near Reedsport, Coquille and other South Coast locations, a press release said. In addition to camping, there are five day-use areas and 35 miles of trail. Popular sites include the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area, Doerner Fir, North Spit and Smith River Falls campground. Eighty percent of the sites are free of charge.

Loon Lake Recreation Area opens Thursday. Campsites, showers, a fishing dock, boat ramp, hiking trail, and sandy beach are all available. Many of the campsites at Loon Lake can be reserved by calling Reserve America at (877) 444-6777, or by visiting the Web site at http://www.Recreation.gov. There also are several non-reservation sites available.

Additional information on campgrounds and other recreation sites is available on the web at http://www.blm.gov/or/districts/coosbay/recreation, or by calling the Coos Bay District Office at 756-0100. Brochures and recreation maps are available online, at local visitor centers, and at the BLM office in North Bend.

Oregon State Parks

Still hoping to get into a state park campground?

Don't count on it for the reservation only sites. All Oregon state park reservable campsites appear booked for the three-day Memorial Day weekend, according to the agency.

"We suggest that people still call until Wednesday to see if any sites are available because of cancellations, but that's a long shot," said Sheri Miller of Reservations Northwest, State Parks' campsite reservations center.

However, there are campsites up for grabs at sites open for first-come, first-served camping. If you want to take your chances, those parks on the south and central coast include:

• Alfred A. Loeb: 10 miles east of Brookings.

• Humbug Mountain: six miles south of Port Orford.

• Cape Blanco: nine miles north of Port Orford.

• Carl Washburne: 14 miles north of Florence.

Sites can be reserved all summer long by calling Reservations Northwest at (800) 452-5687 or online through http://www.oregonstateparks.org.
