Osorio wins state title in shot put

Reedpsort’s Ismael Osorio became a state champion on Friday on the first day of the Class 3A state meet in Monmouth.
Osorio, the favorite in the discus final today, won the shot put Friday with a throw of 48 feet, 1⁄2 inch.
He was the only champion from the South Coast on the first day of the meet, which is being run at the same time as the Class 2A and 1A meets at Western Oregon University.
But the South Coast athletes generally had a good day in qualifying for today’s running finals and had a number of other placers in Friday’s finals.
In the Class 3A boys meet, Reedsport’s Kole Freestone placed fifth in the triple jump. Bandon’s Ben Rich made it safely into the finals in both the 100 and 200 and teammate Isaac Taylor qualified fourth in the 400 meters. Both Bandon relays also made it to today’s finals.
In the Class 3A girls meet, Reedsport’s Lindsey Wright finished third in the high jump and teammate Becca Moore was fifth in the long jump. Bandon’s Briana Valentine placed fourth in the discus and teammate Beth Castro tied for sixth in the high jump.
In the javelin, Myrtle Point’s Sam Sanders was fifth in the javelin, while Reedsport’s Jessica Cooper was eighth. Gold Beach’s Sydney Snook finished fifth in the 3,000.
In prelims, Bandon’s Tyne Riddick advanced in both hurdles races, with Castro also advancing in the high hurdles, and Reedsport’s Ashton Mann made the final in the two sprints. Bandon’s Desi Hall moved on in the 400.
In the Class 1A girls meet, Chelsea Standley of Powers finished fourth in the long jump and also qualified first in the 100 and fifth in the 200.
Pacific’s Wren Carter placed fifth in the 3,000, while Reed Brady was fifth in the triple jump.
