The men’s golf team at Southwestern Oregon Community College has enjoyed unprecedented success this spring while playing on the home golf courses of rival NWAACC teams.
When the Lakers finally got a tournament on their home course, Bandon Dunes, they made the most of the opportunity.
Southwestern won the tournament, which concluded on Monday, beating Spokane by six strokes and finishing far ahead of the other seven teams.
Southwestern posted a two-day score of 586, and two of the Lakers, Jerry Morrell and Andrew Von Lossow, tied for individual honors with scores of 147. Morrell beat Von Lossow on the third hole of sudden death.
It’s the third tournament this spring with a medalist from Southwestern.
Sam Ayottte won at the Cavalier Spring Classic and Nick Fasiono won the Bellevue Invitational. Von Lossow now has twice been runner-up in events.
This week, Von Lossow was named a first-team all-star by NWAACC, with Fasiono and Ayotte on the second team.
“The Southwestern golf team has had an amazing, record-breaking season,” coach Marie Simonds said.
During last weekend’s tournament, Blaine Corkill tied for third, a shot behind Morrell and Von Lossow. Ayotte finished 11th at 152 and Brett Hogg tied for 12th at 153. Fasiano was tied for 14th, another stroke back.
Other Southwestern golfers who participated included Joe Rafson (157) and Joey Ziogas (169).
Southwestern’s women finished fourth, 67 shots behind champion Spokane.
Melissa Blamires was sixth at 180, with Heather Parker 13th at 201. Hayley McKinley finished 24th at 218.
Blamires was named second-team all-league.
The Lakers finish the year this weekend in Walla Walla, Wash., at the NWAACC championships.
Baseball season ends
Southwestern’s baseball season ended with two tough losses at home Thursday, 6-3 and 1-0 to Chemeketa.
In the opener, Adam Reed went 2-for-3 for Southwestern and Reed and Ryan LaThorpe both hit doubles.
In the nightcap, Jon Boswell was a hard-luck loser, pitching a three-hitter, but getting no run support. Chemeketa’s Jason Wilson allowed just one hit, Pat Patterson’s double.
Southwestern finished with an 8-20 record in league play and 10-25 overall mark. Four of the league losses came by one run. Chemeketa finished 15-15.
