North Bend’s girls tennis team advanced three players to the state tournament, with top singles player Amanda Keith and the doubles tandem of Brianna Blaser and Gwen Rogers all reaching the semifinals at the district tournament at Black Butte Ranch on Thursday.

Blaser and Rogers rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the third set to beat Marist’s Kyleigh Gerard and Nicole Walter in the quarterfinals.

“They won six games in a row,” said North Bend coach Simmie Muth. “It was phenomenal. It was a really great match to watch.”

With their ticket to state guaranteed, Blaser and Rogers play today to determine their seeding for the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A championships next week. The North Bend duo, who were not seeded for the district tournament, face the top seeds, Tate Wiley and Jena Mancino of Junction City, in the semifinals today.

Keith, who is seeded third for the district tournaments, won all three of her matches Thursday without losing more than two games in any set. She beat Lindsey Galt of St. Mary’s 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and faces No. 2 seed Alex Carey of Hidden Valley in the semifinals today.

Muth was particularly happy for Keith and Rogers, two four-year North Bend players.

“Our two seniors end up going to state, which is awesome,” she said.

North Bend also still has six players alive in the consolation bracket. Singles players Erica Woomer and Mallory Crocker, as well as doubles teams Kaitlin Kirkeby and Keeandra Rodriguez, and Haley Dunham and Lisa Wiggins, all lost their first matches, but won consolation matches.

“It was a really great day of tennis for us,” Muth said.

The state tournament is next Friday and Saturday in Eugene.

SOFTBALL

Devils top Warriors

Coquille’s softball team played its best game of the season Thursday, beating visiting North Douglas 10-0 in five innings in a nonleague contest.

Nikki Hall pitched a four-hitter, walking two and striking out three, and the Red Devils did not commit any errors on defense.

“It was a good way to end the season with the last home game (for seniors) Steph Jones and Cheyenne Sherbondy,” said Coquille coach Randy Miles, whose team still has two Sunset Conference games, including a trip to Rogue River today.

Jones went 2-for-2, including a double, drove in three runs and scored once for Coquille. Karli Libby had a strong game on defense at second base, recording six outs.
