Last year, the South Coast had a bunch of second-place finishers at the small-schools state meet in Monmouth, but just two winners.

This year, the area’s schools have a realistic hope of several championships, as opposed to the two won last year by Myrtle Point’s Casey Cagley in the pole vault and Coquille’s Frauke Fuchs in the 300-meter hurdles.

Reedsport’s Ismael Osorio is the state leader in the discus, and has the second-best mark among qualifiers in the shot put.

Meanwhile, Bandon’s Cole Scherer has been the state leader all season in the javelin, and has the three best marks among Class 3A throwers.

The state meet begins Friday at Western Oregon University and concludes Saturday. Admission each day is $8 for adults and $5 for students.

Osorio and Scherer are the clearest favorites among the South Coast boys, but not the only ones with hopes of placing well.

Bandon’s Ben Rich is among the favorites in both the 100 and 200 meters, while teammate Isaac Taylor holds the same hopes in the 400. The Tigers also have two of the better relays.

Reedsport’s Kole Freestone, who had a big personal best in the triple jump at the district meet, could place well in the event.

Among the Class 3A girls, Reedsport freshman Ashton Mann could place well in both the 100 and 200 meters.

Fellow freshman Lindsey Wright and Bandon’s Beth Castro are among the leaders in the pole vault and Wright could place well in the high jump, though Santiam Christian freshman Sara Almen is the clear leader in the event.

Bandon’s Tyne Riddick is among the favorites in the high hurdles, and should place in the 300-meter hurdles, as well.

And Gold Beach’s Sydney Snook, a sophomore who was named outstanding female athlete at the Sunset Conference meet after winning the 400, 1,500 and 3,000, would like to improve on her second-place finishes in the longer races last year. Coquille’s Allison Cook is a returning placer in the shot put.

Reedsport, which won seven individual events at the district meet, could take a trophy in the meet, though the team favorite is Catlin Gabel, which is loaded in multiple events, including the hurdles races and the distance events.

The two-day event also includes the Class 2A and 1A state meets.

Both Powers and Pacific have several athletes who could place well this week.

Powers senior Chelsea Standley is among the favorites in both the 100 and 200 and could place well in the long jump, where Sherman’s Karissa Mobley has by far the best mark.

Jesse Culley of Pacific ranks in the top four in the shot put.

Among the boys, Pacific’s Reed Brady could place well in the triple jump, and Kyle Blanton of Powers will aim to place in the javelin.

The competition starts at 11 a.m. both days, with preliminaries running until 8 p.m. on Friday and the final race Saturday starting just before 5 p.m.

There is no parking fee at Western Oregon University.

The meet’s results can be tracked both Friday and Saturday on the Oregon School Activities Association’s Web page, www.osaa.org.
