Marshfield’s boys and girls track teams took the lead on the first day of the Midwestern League district meet at Silke Field in Springfield, and qualified several individuals for the state meet.
Marshfield’s boys had 54 points, with Springfield second at 45.16 after a three-way tie for eighth in the high jump.
Marshfield’s girls had 42 points, while North Eugene was second at 37.5.
The meet concludes Friday. The top two finishers in each event advance to the state meet.
Marshfield’s boys got two victories, both in jumping events.
Levi Meline won the high jump, with teammate Shane Daly second. Daly, meanwhile, won the long jump with a personal-best leap of 21 feet, 11⁄4 inches.
Marshfield also got another boy to state. Chris Krajcir tied for second in the pole vault, but won a jump-off for second place with Churchill’s Michael Freeman.
Springfield got 24 of its points from the 3,000 meters, where Tim Costin, Dylan Arana and Drew Gerg took the top three spots.
The other winners Wednesday were Churchill’s Arie Rolfe in the pole vault and Thurston’s Javan Gray in the discus.
Marshfield’s girls had one winner Wednesday. Moriah Roberge repeated as pole vault champion, clearing 12 feet. She’ll try to repeat her state title in the event next week at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Roberge broke her own district record by 2 inches and won the school’s eighth straight title in the event. Older sisters Celina and Muriel also were district champions, along with Amber Wiley.
The Pirates also had state qualifiers in two other events.
Tori Scott finished second in the 3,000 meters to earn her first trip to state in track, though favorite and teammate Jana Sadler faded down the stretch and didn’t place. Springfield’s Caitlynn Holmes won the event in 11 minutes, 24.45 seconds, while Scott was timed in 11:35.15.
In the discus, Marshfield’s Hannah Francis finished second. North Eugene’s Yvonne Couts won the event with a throw of 113-7, while Francis had a best of 112-2.
The other winner was Thurston’s Elise Nelson, who took the long jump.
SOFTBALL
Marshfield wins finale
Marshfield’s softball team ended the season with a win, beating host Springfield 3-0 on Wednesday.
The Pirates and Millers each finished 5-10 in Midwestern League play.
“It’s a nice way to end the season,” said Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel. “Obviously, it’s been a frustrating season of close losses, but the kids competed hard all year long and we’re glad to finish on a positive note.”
Brittney Young pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts in her final high school game. Natalie Caffey had an RBI and Tiffany Wiley, Brianna George and Alisha Charitar scored the Pirates’ runs.
The Pirates won three of their last five games, including a victory over second-place Churchill, and also beat Thurston, the league’s No. 3 playoff team, earlier in the season. Marshfield also just missed in all three of its games with league champion North Eugene.
BASEBALL
Millers top Pirates
Springfield had four home runs and beat host Marshfield 9-2 in the season finale on Wednesday.
Springfield pitcher Brad Gregory pitched a three-hitter and hit two of the home runs. Az Camarena also had a home run and a double, and Mike Travess hit a three-run shot that broke the game open for the Millers in the sixth inning.
The Pirates scored both their runs in the bottom of the sixth. Tyler Graves had a double and scored when Cody Dew reached on an error. Dew later scored on a passed ball.
Marshfield finished 1-14 in Midwestern League play, ending the season on a long losing streak while being hampered by injuries, including one to pitcher Kane Rowley, and having several players ineligible under the school’s new academic standards.
“It’s a tough way to play a season,” Marshfield coach Quintin Hall said. “You look and I could tell you all these negative things.
“I’m pleased that we have eight or nine kids returning next year. Hopefully some of those kids who didn’t play this year will come out.”
In addition, nearly all the players will be in some form of ball during the summer, either in Babe Ruth or American Legion. And even as the losses piled up, players gained experience.
“A lot of my younger kids got to play this year,” Hall said. “It will benefit us in the long run. There will be a lot less growing pains.”
BOYS TENNIS
Bulldogs second
North Bend’s tennis team finished second to Marist in the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A District 3 tournament at Medford.
Doubles partners Zach Reichenberger and Nathan Kahler were beaten in the semifinals by eventual champions Scott Morse and Eric Morse of Cascade Christian. But Reichenberger and Kahler bounced back to win the third-place match over Cascade Christian’s Jeffrey Morse and Taylor Pena 7-5, 6-4.
Reichenberger and Kahler will compete at the state tournament in Eugene next week.
Meanwhile, Adam Escoto won the consolation singles title for NorthBend.
North Bend’s girls begin their district tennis tournament today at Black Butte. Like the boys, the district includes a variety of schools from across the southern part of the state —Canyonville Christian Academy, Henley, Hidden Valley, Junction City, Marist, Sisters, St. Mary’s and North Bend.
