Oregon State University drive tops $500 million

CORVALLIS (AP) - The economic downturn doesn't seem to be hurting Oregon State University's first comprehensive fundraising campaign.
The university said The Campaign for OSU recently hit the $500 million mark and is on track to meet its goal of raising $625 million by 2011.
One in five of the university's graduates has donated to The Campaign for OSU, according to the school.
"We are surrounded by a vast community of friends, thousands strong, who believe in our mission, support our work and share our vision of greater excellence," OSU President Ed Ray said in a news release.
The university also is likely to see its second-best fundraising year, and has raised nearly $70 million this fiscal year.
"It's fairly typical for the kickoff, or public launch year, to be the best year of a campaign," said Molly Brown, an OSU spokeswoman, told the Gazette Times newspaper in Corvallis.
Last year, the OSU Foundation recorded its best fundraising year, bringing in $127 million for the university, said Molly Brown, senior director of strategic communications and donor relations.
The money from the campaign has helped transform Apperson Hall into Kearney Hall, which came through $12 million in private funding. Also, the money helped fund 28 newly endowed faculty positions, an increase of 40 percent.
More than $78 million also has been collected toward scholarships and fellowships and the OSU Foundation is counting on more to come. The university has set a $100 million goal.
