Coast Guard looks at new rules

PORTLAND (AP) - The Coast Guard is reopening the period for public comment on a proposed rule to establish regulated navigation areas at the mouths of rivers along the Oregon and Washington coasts.
The proposed rule would change the procedures for restricting recreational and uninspected passenger boat traffic from crossing a hazardous river bar.
The Port and Waterways Safety Act rule proposal would also streamline procedures for closing hazardous bars within the navigation area during severe conditions.
It would also establish additional safety requirements for recreational and small commercial vessels to reduce the risks of operating on or near the bars.
All written comments must be received by the Coast Guard no later than June 30.
