Spots in next week’s state golf tournaments will be on the line Monday and Tuesday for all the South Coast schools with programs in the spring sport.
The top two teams at each district tournament qualify for state, along with the top three individuals not on those teams.
The Midwestern League boys and girls tournaments both will be held at Tokatee Golf Course near Blue River, with the Pirates hoping to extend recent runs of success. Marshfield’s girls are the defending champions and the boys have been to the state tournament four straight years.
There’s no guarantee this year, though.
“I think we’re going to have to shoot 325 to 330 two days in a row to qualify,” said Marshfield coach Scott Banks, adding that the team’s best this season is 335.
“We need to step up our game to qualify.”
The Pirates have a team nearly entirely made up of newcomers, with Gabe Anderson, Bryan Johnson and Ethan Schade on the district squad and three others in the mix for the final two spots — Paul Woytus, Tyler Klein and Andrew Luckman.
Thurston is the team favorite, led by defending medalist Tyler Falk. The Pirates are in the mix with Churchill and North Eugene for second.
Marshfield’s girls have a young team, led by senior Brittany Gillmore. The rest of the varsity roster includes a junior and three freshmen.
“Having six freshmen on the team, it’s been a huge rebuilding year,”coach Mindie Wilson said.
Both Churchill and Thurston beat Marshfield at the last event with all the Midwestern League teams, held last week at Tokatee. Churchill’s Caroline Inglis is the individual favorite, though Gillmore enters as the third-ranked golfer in the league.
The Pirates also rank third as a team.
“It’s a long shot for second place for us,”Wilson said. “But you never know.”
Far West League boys
Brookings-Harbor was the top team at the four regular-season tournaments — the fifth was washed away at Sandpines on Monday — and secured the regular-season title and one of the two spots at state.
The other will be decided Monday and Tuesday at Bandon Crossings.
North Bend has consistently been the No. 2 team in the league, led by Scott Cooper, Tyler McKinley and Seth Johnson.
The Bulldogs were the only team to beat the Bruins in a league match, when the teams played on North Bend’s home course at Sunset Bay Golf Course.
Girls Class 4A-3A-2A-1A District 3
Sutherlin is the favorite in the district, which includes all the South Coast schools, as well as a number of Douglas County schools.
Second place could come down to a battle between North Bend and Siuslaw.
Siuslaw had an edge earlier in the season, but the Bulldogs beat the Vikings in the North Bend Invitational this week and in the recent Sandpines Invitational at Florence. At Sandpines, the Bulldogs shot 479, which was 121 strokes better than their first tournament of the year.
Siuslaw hosts the first 18 holes of the two-day tournament at Sandpines on Monday. The final day is at Forest Hills in Reedsport on Tuesday.
North Bend’s Josse Crismon and Mallory Crocker have consistently been among the better golfers in the district, along with Alyssa Stalcup of Gold Beach, Julianne Butler of Siuslaw and Hannah Swenson of Coquille. South Umpqua’s Annie Johnson and Sutherlin’s Kayla Powell are the medalist favorites.
Boys Class 3A-2A-1A District 3
Reedsport, Bandon, Coquille, Myrtle Point and Powers join Creswell, Glide, Lifegate Christian, McKenzie, Mohawk and Oakridge on Monday and Tuesday at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell.
Creswell finished far ahead of the group Monday, with Reedsport a distant second and Bandon third, on the same course used for district. McKenzie did not participate in the event.
Reedsport’s Cody Savey missed medalist honors by one stroke and appears a good bet to get an individual bid to state if the Braves can’t lock up one of the team berths.
Boys Class 3A-2A-1A District 6
Gold Beach is in a special district with Cascade Christian, Rogue River, Chiloquin, Hosanna Christian, Lakeview, St. Mary’s and Triad.
The Panthers, who qualified for state the past two years, host the district event Monday and Tuesday at Salmon Run near Brookings.
