North Bend’s 23-game Far West League baseball win streak came to an end Tuesday when the Bulldogs lost the second game of a doubleheader to host Douglas at Winston.

But the Bulldogs’ 5-0 win in the opener meant North Bend remained alone in first place just over halfway through the league season.

North Bend’s Bryce Weidman fired a two-hit shutout in the win, striking out 13 batters. He also contributed two hits on offense.

Skyler Walton went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Bulldogs and Sean Jany had a double and single and scored two of the runs.

Douglas bounced back to win the nightcap 9-2, handing the Bulldogs their first loss since the final game of the 2007 regular season. North Bend ran the table in the league season last year, posting a 15-0 record while reaching the No. 1 ranking in the Class 4A coaches poll.

Sky Woods and Ricky Cortes combined to limit the Bulldogs to just three hits on offense.

Meanwhile, Jered Stoffal had a game-tying home run for Douglas in the fourth inning, and the Trojans added two more runs in the fourth and four in the fifth. Stoffal had two hits and scored four runs in the game, and Cortes went 2-for-3.

North Bend coach Brad Horning said the Bulldogs deserved their fate in the second game.

“We were in a ballgame that we didn’t do anything offensively to win,” he said, adding that Douglas earned the victory with a strong performance.

Finishing one season unbeaten in league play is quite an accomplishment, Horning said.

“It’s definitely hard to do in baseball,” he said, adding that the Bulldogs didn’t focus on the streak, instead taking things one game at a time.

“It’s not something we talked about,” he said. “Now that it’s over, hopefully we can start another one.”

Games postponed

The entire Sunset Conference baseball and softball schedule was washed away by Tuesday’s rain, with all the games rescheduled for today, weather permitting.

TRACK & FIELD

Marshfield boys top Colts

Marshfield’s boys beat host Thurston 91-54 in the final regular-season track and field meet for the two schools.

Caleb Kruse won his three individual events and helped Marshfield’s 4x100 relay team to a victory. Kruse posted impressive marks of 15.07 seconds in the high hurdles, 39.77 in the intermediate hurdles and 44 feet, 11 inches in the triple jump, though none were season bests.

Blake Kemp, who usually joins Kruse in both hurdles races, instead ran the 200 in an impressive winning time of 23.02 seconds. He was one of seven individual champions for the Pirates, joining Kruse, Chris Cordova (shot put), Levi Meline (high jump), Shane Daly (long jump), Chris Krajcir (pole vault) and Callen Cooper (400). Cordova’s mark of 49-41⁄2 in the shot put was a season best and moves him to No. 1 in the Midwestern League rankings.

Thurston’s girls edged Marshfield 77-68.

The Pirates won six individual events — Hannah Francis (discus), Moriah Roberge (javelin), Brenna Vickrey (high jump), MaKenzie Scott (triple jump), Emily Beasley (pole vault) and Tori Scott (3,000).

Among those athletes, MaKenzie Scott had the most impressive mark with her leap of 35-13⁄4, a personal best by more than two feet, which moved her up to second in the Midwestern League rankings and third in all Class 5A.

The Pirates compete in the Midwestern League meet next Wednesday and Friday at Silke Field in Eugene.

The first district meets are this week, with the Sunset Conference championships Friday and Saturday in Bandon and Powers and Pacific competing in the Class 1A Mountain Skyline special district on Saturday in La Pine.
