No personal ramps.

No homemade jumps.

Those are some of the rules city of Coos Bay staffers are recommending for the skate park nearing completion at Mingus Park.

The rules, which city councilors are expected to vote on tonight, also prohibit bicycles, motorized vehicles, roller skates, in-line skates and scooters.

If adopted, these rules will be posted at the skate park. They also include: no alcohol, tobacco, drugs or glass containers; no skating when wet; and "skate at your own risk."

The park's construction has been delayed by more than seven months due to less volunteer help than anticipated and budget overruns. City Manager Chuck Freeman said an opening ceremony is being scheduled for some time in June. The park's skating structures are done, he said, but there are some finishing touches still needing to be completed.

"We are like 90 percent there," Freeman said.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Coos Bay City Hall, 500 Central Ave.

That "skate park" looks more like something I'd see in the Flintstones, not the kind of skating environment seen in places like Portland, Corvallis, or other Oregon cities with these facilities.

It is nice to know that only skateboards are allowed, however. What a forward-thinking design!
Glad to see that the community cares so much about BMX riders, in-line skaters (... okay, nobody does that anymore), or other wheeled devices, that we'd spend all of this money on an exclusive-use park, so a few expert riders can have a new city to play in for a few minutes.

If the park had been built differently it could have been used by bicycles, scooters and roller skaters but this park was built by pro skaters for the pro skaters. They are already showing off their pics and a video on concretedisciples.com How fair is it that they have already skated the park but if our kids go in there they get cited for trespassing?

Um, seriously, no skating when wet??? That is pretty ridiculous, they aren't hurting anyone but their own skateboards by getting them wet. Being a Mother of a skater I also know it's not more dangerous to skate "when wet". I think you're really limiting their skating time. I mean, c'mon this is Coos Bay. It just may rain a little bit.....

I walked around that skate park. Its a pathetic crowding and unsafe design. Recently in Mingus Park, kids came flying down the long ramping sidewalk with their skateboards. All I could do was smile at their speeding joyful delight while remembering my childhood on a skateboard the length of a bread box. If I had the money, these kids would have a real skate park.

Don't think you should rule against skates, not anymore dangerous than a skateboard. Bicycles are just too big

I don't know what looks worse, what they did to McAuley Hospital or that contraption across the street they call a Skate Park? Too bad that hospital isn't still open, I bet that park would get them a whole bunch of business!!!
