Post office readies for elections

Sunday, May 03, 2009 |
The U.S. Postal Service will be in the elections business over the next couple weeks. And senders beware.
Postal workers will be moving recall ballots that are due by 8 p.m. Tuesday. Then they'll be delivering special election ballots for the May 19 vote on various district boards. Those ballots will require special attention and special stamps from readers.
The special election ballots are due eight days after the postal service increases first-class postage by two cents. If voters are quick about mailing in their ballots, they won't need to get new stamps. But if they wait, they will have to shell out another two cents to get the mail sent.
A post office supervisor said even if someone doesn't have the correct amount on their ballot mailing, mailmen will still make an effort to get the ballots to the county before the deadline, though there is the possibility of delays.
To avoid the stamp switch, voters can buy forever stamps before the May 11 deadline, or return ballots at drop boxes around the county.
