A 6-year-old boy tried to run away from school Monday, but didn't get far.

At about 12:30 p.m., Coos County dispatchers got a call from Lighthouse School, 93670 Viking Lane, reporting a boy in jeans and a white shirt had taken off and was heading toward Wildwood Road, according to the Coos County sheriff's log.

Nine minutes later, dispatchers got a second call saying the boy had been found.

Any of you worried about kids running off from school, you're more than welcome to volunteer for some playground duty.

There's a whole lotta kids at recess and few staff members to watch them.

To all the arm chair quarterbacks out there, I was a teachers aide. At some times during the day I had 200 students on the playground. When they ask to go to the bathroom, I can't leave and walk with them. We don't have outdoor johns, so you take a risk every time you let them go back in. There are side doors in every building, you watch them go in and they can shoot out another door that you can't see. I suggest for everyone commenting here an hour on recess with 200+ elementary students. ALONE...thats how it was for me.

We don't know if the kid was at recess. We as teachers do not have the right to tell the kids "no, you can't leave class to go to the restroom because you will be unsupervised." When we do, the parents call in and complain.

Also, with budget cuts, we have less and less staff watching more and more students at lunch and recess. The kids know it, and because in some homes respecting authority and the system isn't valued, you are going to see this more and more.

To Jess B: When our children are at school, they are under the SUPERVISION of the school staff, NOT the parent! The person, teacher or whoever is supposed to be watching them on the playground is fully responsible for that childs wellbeing, not the parent! Where is the fence around this place, or a locked gate? This is a little 6 year old, last time I looked just about all 6 yr. olds are out of control but it is not due to the parent it is due to the age while in a playground situation!

I think a big portion of the blame could be put on the teachers. But, what about the parents? Why are the kids so out of control that they are running down the street away from their teachers?

What is up with these teachers of our little ones these days? This is the second time in as many weeks that this has happened. I tell you, if this had happened or happens to one of my grandchildren, some heads would seriously be rolling! These teachers are really lucky that nothing has happened to these little guys YET. In this world full of pediphiles and sickos, next time they may not be so lucky!
