Ballots will be in the mail soon and to help voters make choices in contested races, the League of Women Voters of Coos County will host a Voter Forum on Wednesday, April 29.

The event will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Coos Bay City Council Chambers at City Hall. The public is invited to hear from candidates running for contested seats on the Coos County Airport District and Southwestern Oregon Community College Boards, and from Coos County Commissioner Kevin Stufflebean and Larry Van Elsberg with respect to the recall election.

Candidates who have been invited to speak include:

• Coos County Airport District: Position 2, Joe Benetti and  Fred Kirby; Position 4, Jon Barton, Patrick Elliott and Stephen Pickering.

• SOCC board of directors: Position 2, Marcia Jensen and  Dick McMahon; Position 5, Brett Kenney, Julie Kremers and  John Robert Shilling.

Recall election ballots will be mailed Friday and due May 5.

For the special district election, the new voter registration deadline is April 28. Those ballots will be mailed May 1 and due May 19.

Voters who need to update their registration information can do so until 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Nationally, the League of Women Voters has an exceptional and long-standing reputation for running non-partisan voter information events, a press release said.  League events do not allow promotional materials for a particular candidate or issue inside the venue.

Questions are submitted in writing, to avoid duplicate or inflammatory questions. Candidates are held to time limits when speaking to make sure all participants have an equal opportunity to present their positions.
