We elect officials to make choices

Monday, April 27, 2009 |
For years I have watched Kevin Stufflebean faithfully serve his community. He has consistently worked hard for those that elected him, and has conducted himself with honesty and integrity. Throughout his years on the Coos Bay City Council, and now as a Coos County commissioner, Kevin has had to make some very difficult decisions. As people who have been elected to public office know, such responsibility comes with the territory.
When serving on the Coos Bay School Board, because of deep financial cuts, our board members were charged with the terrible task of closing elementary schools. Those were painful and controversial, but necessary decisions. Some district patrons disagreed with the choices we made and let the board members know. That is as it should be. But I'm disheartened and concerned that some disgruntled individuals in Coos County who don't support the commissioners' prudent decisions think Kevin should be recalled. I disagree!
These are hard times. Kevin did what the voters have every right to expect of their elected officials. With his fellow commissioners he carefully weighed the financial issues facing the county and made a difficult choice that effected the Road Department. In the process Kevin and his fellow commissioners decided how to balance the needs of county residents while considering the devastating decline in revenue the county is facing.Ê
I am also dismayed that people who are concerned about expenditures are forcing the county to spend tens of thousands of dollars on this recall election, funds that could be put to any number of more beneficial purposes within our community.Ê
Voters elect people to serve on boards and commissions. We all expect those elected to use their good judgment to face the difficult choices that their offices sometimes require. If you disagree with an action speak up! But also please acknowledge the responsibility and the authority your elected officials have to make those tough calls during their term of service.
I urge you to vote, and vote no on the recall. Keep Kevin Stufflebean in office.
