Questions surround layoff decision

Kevin Stufflebean is trying to convince the public there was a budget shortfall and severe cuts were made in the Road Department. The County timber payments were renewed last year. Payments for this year were 90 percent of last year's payment which equates to a $200,000 shortfall. A one-time gift from the Oregon Department of Transportation was not renewed, but cannot be counted as a loss of regular revenue. Other budget shortfalls were a projection of fuel tax reductions, not real numbers. Kevin inflated maintenance costs to $2.8 million using flawed cost accounting methods. The high repair costs were a direct result of Kevin's decisions.

Kevin's secretive decision to lay off the road workers was done so poorly and was such a grievous violation of law that Coos County is now faced with an unfair labor practices complaint that could result in more than $650,000 in settlements! Kevin claims the tire man and body man only did those jobs, but Kevin himself added many jobs to those positions during his two years as roadmaster. Kevin took away the budget from the business manager and had sole authority to write and approve his own budget, so how could managers alert him of upcoming budget shortfalls as Kevin has claimed?

Why were  department managers given large raises during the layoff period if there was a budget shortfall? How come a roadmaster was hired after 22 employees were laid off, leaving one manager for every four employees? Why are they spending $760,000 on new equipment if there is a budget shortfall? Kevin has yet to convince the  majority of voters of his reason for the Road Department reorganization. The excuses vary from day to day.

The issues for recall are many. Public safety cuts have endangered the lives of the public from lack of road maintenance to slashing patrol deputies and jail beds. Awarding no-bid contracts to out-of-town contractors. Spending money on computer systems and building upgrades while public safety dwindles. Kevin should have resigned and saved the taxpayers $60,000! We need a commissioner who acts with honesty and integrity. One who will listen to the public and act appropriately with his constituents. This is why Kevin Stufflebean must be recalled. Please join me and vote yes to recall Kevin Stufflebean.

Monica:

You obviously are not being truthful, as Stufflebean has 5 sisters, and only 1 of them lives here. I know her personally, and Becky would never be best friends with someone that had a grudge against her brother, and if you are talking about the other 4, they have either not lived here or not been around for years, so can't be best friends with someone that has not lived here for over 10 years.

It's Shallow Al if you please. We haven't been properly introduced.

I have heard from road department folks prior to Kevin arriving on the scene that the budget was a train wreck and that cuts would have to be made. The fact that people are suprised this happened is perhaps a window into the vaslidity of the complaining about Mr. Stufflebean. I understand there is trauma in being forced to relocate to find a good paying job. That's why we need to bring in industry so that we can keep our kids together with their friends and stay close to our families.

Gee, Dean. You think the roadmaster was hired because none of the 22 employees were QUALIFIED for the position? Stick with the whole truth. You'll sleep better at night.

Ho boy, there's trouble in river city folks.

It only gets deeper and deeper.

Note to Nikki: You might want to start looking for a new job too

Shallow, it is funny how the same people who contributed to Stufflebeans campaign in one way or another, or the same people who are righting the letters to the editor! That is what I meant by my statement! Sorry for the misunderstanding!

Yes Shannon I do have a grudge against Stufflebean, he has hurt my family in the past....I have know him for many years! His sister is one of my best friends!

You can actually name everyone who voted for Stufflebean?

Damn!

Can you explain magnets too?

I am not part of the recall effort and I want the man out. The accusations, the proof and the half truths have cast a huge doubt on his abilities as commissioner. Because of the doubt now there, I dont trust him. He's lost my trust and I want him gone.

Shannon wrote on May 1, 2009 8:53 PM:

To Marlee--On this blog you deny being a part of the recall group by saying, "I am not part of the recall effort, never have been."

In another blog you say, "but unforunately my family has suffered at the hands of Stufflebean and I cannot standby and let him get away with it! I will fight the fight until it is over...one way or another!"

So, pardon me if I am confused. It certainly seems that you have a personal grudge against Commissioner Stufflebean.

marlee wrote on May 1, 2009 11:37 AM:

Shannon...I am sorry but I am not part of the recall effort, never have been. I am just a very concerned Coos county citizen, who has had bad dealings with Stufflebean in the past....I didn't vote for him knowing his background and how vindictive he can be....I also didn't believe he had the education, experience, or the attitude to be some one in an authoritarian position such as County commissioner! So far, nothing you have said has changed my mind!

Shannon wrote on Apr 29, 2009 4:13 PM:

Marlee--Yes, name names. We are proud to be supportive of Kevin. Some from your group has had some very questionable behavior. Do you want me to name names? But, you don't need me to because you already know!

Of course, your group not only has a right to have your own opinions, but you have a right to speak up about it. All I am saying is that when you speak, you need to tell the truth.

marlee wrote on Apr 28, 2009 8:01 PM:

Shannon...the only people writing in support of Kevin are the ones who voted for him in the first place! The same people who contributed to his campaign...do I need to name names!
These people who want Kevin out of office have every right to voice their opinions just like you! Don't begrudge them that!
They all make valid points!

Shannon wrote on Apr 28, 2009 12:09 PM:

And, maybe you too are a disgruntled road worker. I really don't know, just guessing, because the only ones writing letters seem to be people directly involved.

marlee wrote on Apr 28, 2009 11:14 AM:

nicely stated Dean...thak you for your insight!
