Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frasier has filed formal charges against former Coquille police officer James Bryant and his wife, Tammy Bryant.

The district attorney is charging James Bryant with three counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor and one count of attempting to contribute to the sexual delinquency of a minor. A District Attorney's Office press release said Bryant provided alcohol to three different individuals younger than 21 years of age and attempted to have sexual intercourse with a girl younger than 18.

The DA charged Tammy Bryant with one count with furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Police arrested James Bryant on March 18. Officers started an investigation after a citizen called police, alleging Bryant gave alcohol to a teenage girl and tried to get another to engage in a sexual act in Coos Bay on March 17 or 18.

The DA also has asked Coos Bay police to issue citations of allowing consumption of alcohol by a minor on a property to Michael and Cynthia Wallace, the people in charge of the premises, the press release said. The Wallaces were not related to the minors involved in the case, Coos Bay police Capt. Gary McCullough said.

Furnishing alcohol to a minor is a class A misdemeanor, punishable with a maximum one-year sentence and a fine not to exceed $6,250. Attempting to contribute to the sexual delinquency of a minor is a class B misdemeanor with a maximum sentence of 6 months and a fine of $2,500. The Wallaces' citations are a violation and subject to mandatory fine of $350.

James and Tammy Bryant are scheduled to appear in Coos County Circuit Court at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5.

First off, he was NOT protected by Reaves. The city let his wife go, and that was supported by Chief Reaves. You have to receive a verifiable complaint in order to proceed. And remember Sullivan, Brenden and Morin? All "dealt with" by Reaves. Things like this can happen in ANY department. Dannel's not "cleaning" out anything. Verifiable complaints happened during his tenure, and it is that simple.

It's about time they got into trouble for this. I know for a fact they give alcohol to minors. But what do you do when you see that...call the police?

Coquille is much better without this person. Hope he gets his big time.

Linda wrote on Apr 17, 2009 10:39 AM:

He'll just geta little wack and protective custody. Heck he probably get to play video games and eat donuts with the rest of the crew. I say put them in the general population just like anyone else committing a crime.

If the police would check a little deeper, then would find a lot more charges to bring against both of these people. I incourage Bryant's other victims to please come forward NOW. There is nothing to be ashamed of and YOU would probably feel a lot better seeing both of these behind bars for a while where they both belong for what they did now and what they have done in the past. Think about it girls, and come forward and tell the new Chief, he is your friend and will get justice for you.

Let's reflect further on that Coquille PD roster from the '80s: Pettingill, King, Blue Lou et. al. You could have had a TV series with that crew. I'd even pay to see a "where are they now?" deal.

Well it's about time this bird stands in court for his crimes. For to long he was protected by the former chief.

What were these girls charges with? MIP? Don't tell me they are innocent because they wouldn't have accepted alcohol before the legal age to drink if there were.

Here we go creating another generation of VICTIMS.

Just An Observer wrote on Apr 16, 2009 4:32 PM:

How weird is is that one alcohol to minors charge has such a much heavier possible sentence than the sexual delinquency charge. My head is spinning and I need a drink...LOL!

Rocco St.Bruno wrote on Apr 16, 2009 3:02 PM:

He didn’t do it, he’s innocent I tell you. This is a travesty of justice.

I grew up in Coquille and it was a great place to live as a kid. What has happened to the police department. This kind thing did not happen when Corky Daniels was chief.
