Coos Bay schools shuffle principals - again

Another administrative domino fell Wednesday in the Coos Bay School District as officials named Travis Howard to become principal of Millicoma Intermediate School.
Howard, who has been the principal at Marshfield High School since 2006, was pegged to move to Bunker Hill Elementary School in January as part of an administrative reshuffling. But with Millicoma Principal Bryan Trendell moving to Marshfield High School to serve as athletic director and assistant principal, the district decided to shift Howard again.
A screening committee reviewed about 20 applications for the Millicoma vacancy before asking Howard if he'd take the post.
He taught fifth and sixth grade for five years in Coquille and served as an assistant principal and principal at Sunset Middle School for six before moving to the high school.
"Travis has the best experience to suit the position," said Dale Inskeep, who served on the screening committee.
Although he didn't apply for the position, Howard said he liked the idea.
"It was just a natural fit for me to get back to that level," he said.
Howard will continue to make about $88,000 because his contract allows him to keep the same salary he gets at the high school.
School officials aren't done yet.
They'll turn their focus to Bunker Hill Elementary School, where Howard had been assigned in January in moves that sent Inskeep to Sunset Middle School and made Greg Mulkey principal at Marshfield. Sunset Middle School's current principal Jon Mishra was tapped to go to Marshfield, but resigned from the district in February.
The Millicoma screening committee also included Trendell, Blossom Gulch Elementary School principal Jodi O'Mara, director of special programs Lisa DeSalvio and Superintendent Bob De La Vergne.
