Babies can benefit from sign language workshop

Thursday, April 16, 2009 |
For parents who have ever wished they knew what a baby or toddler was thinking, there is a way, and North Bend's public library wants to help.
The library is offering a class so parents can learn about signing with a baby or toddler. The free one-hour Baby Sign workshop for parents and caregivers will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the North Bend Public Library.
Children's Librarian Sara Simpkins will teach adults how to get started signing and introduce them to the variety of resources the library has available. Informational handouts also will be available, including a free 50-sign illustrated dictionary. Parents are asked to leave their mobile babies and toddlers at home so that everyone in attendance can give full attention to the material being presented.
Research shows babies and toddlers who learn some basic American Sign Language vocabulary talk sooner, have larger vocabularies, show more interest in books, engage in more sophisticated play, experience less frustration and crying, have fewer tantrums, and develop a closer bond with their parents and siblings than non-signing children.
The program will be repeated July 21 and Oct. 17. For additional information about free signing workshops or other library programs for children and parents, drop by the North Bend Public Library at 1800 Sherman Ave. or call 756-0400 during library hours. The library is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
