A Coos Bay woman got a scare Tuesday afternoon when she thought her trailer had caught fire.

At about 3:25 p.m., the Coos Bay Fire Department received a report of a possible fire in the bathroom of 465 Village Pines Way. Elaine Owens reported she saw a red glow in the bathroom and had people get out of the structure. She asked firefighters to hurry because there are many trees around the trailer.

Fire Chief Stan Gibson said 14 firefighters, two engines and a command unit went to the scene where they soon found there had been no blaze. He explained that sunlight had been reflected off the shower from an access door on the outside of the trailer.

“The occupants were really shook,” Gibson said. “They really believed they had a fire.”

Firefighters remained on scene for about 15 minutes.

“It’s a very unusual call,” Gibson said.

I havnt personally seen it yet, but this is what I have seen on TV. Last 2 weeks in February through early March in Yosemite, the sun shines so brightly on the late afternoon waterfalls that the water shimmers like yellow fire and gold.

If any of you have been on the ferry that transports across the sound in Seattle, right around the time of sunset, you would know that something like this is amazingly probable.

There is a building located amongst the city sky scrapers that glows a brilliant orange in the reflection of the sun. I recall many a people aboard the ferry in terror thinking that this large building was burning down...

Only to find that it was merely a reflection. Such things don't speak against the intelligence of the person viewing it, it is merely an illusion and a mistake that can be made by anyone.

And, as I have always thought, it is definitely better to be safe than sorry!

You do forget what the sun looks like with all of the weather modification they do to block it in our state. We are just the big drinking fountain for California.

Good Call Be Nice. I would rather respond to 100 "could of been something" and no one got hurt then 1 "I need to go check and now I am dead" call. I have responded to everything from my dog speed dialed 911 to fog and street light look like a house fire. We have a good laugh and go home safe and sound. Remember If in doubt call the experts to check. The life you save may be your own.

Neighbor called the fire department on me for using gas to start my burn barell. Fire department showed up and show me how to improve my burn barrel.
I got better things to do than bother my neighbors and city services.

Those folks must come from a very rainy place for not being able to recognize what sunlight is.

Most fire fighter/emt's seek out their line of work because of the appeal of morons wasting their time, not raging fires and bring idiots back from the brink of death.

Hey, it's not really that funny, she could have been hurt and she probably had like a caridac arrest! At least it was a false alarm... just be glad it's good news not bad.

This just in: The sun -- orange & bright.

Next up: The sky -- blue!

Lorax64 wrote on Apr 16, 2009 1:10 AM:

Lighten up. It's much smarter to call for help early, even if it's a false alarm. Fire and ambulance crews would much rather find out everyone is safe and sound than have to deal with injuries and destruction of property. Many times a few minutes makes the difference between a good call and a bad call.

And if it had been a fire and she went to investigate, she could have been hurt. Good call. Better to be safe than sorry.

That's what happens when you live in Oregon. You forget what the sun looks like.
