More Oregon jobless will get benefits

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 |
SALEM (AP) - An additional 6,000 laid-off Oregon workers will qualify for unemployment benefits as a result of a bill that's on its way to the governor.
The measure, which won final approval Tuesday in the Oregon House, clears the way for Oregon to receive $90 million under the federal stimulus package to provide the additional jobless benefits.
Among the likely beneficiaries are women who return to work after raising children, young people who lose their first jobs, and those who work in industries that are sporadic, such as construction.
The measure would change the formula for calculating unemployment benefits, allowing laid-off workers to count their most recent work experience.
Backers said the bill is timely, given that Oregon's unemployment rate reached 12.1 percent in March, tying the record set in November 1982.
