COQUILLE - Incoming third-graders will walk onto a new campus and Coquille schools will have one less principal starting in September.

Coquille School Board members voted Monday to move third-grade classes from Lincoln Elementary School to Coquille Valley School, where the fourth-through eighth-grade classes are now. The district office will move to Lincoln, where Diann Gillaspie will serve as superintendent and principal of the elementary school.

With state revenues plummeting, the district needs to cut between $800,000 and $1.2 million from next year's budget.

Moving the third-graders to Coquille Valley will save about $130,000 a year. Closing Jefferson - the district is working on selling the former school and current district office - will save an additional $40,000 each year.

Lincoln Elementary's new principal, Julie Entz, likely will be laid off, Gillaspie said.

Entz, who started at Lincoln this year, said she hasn't received official notice, but administrators had discussed the possibility.

"I've had a wonderful year," Entz said Monday following the vote.

Gillaspie said because Entz had only worked for the district starting this year, her contract was probationary and renewable year-to-year. Entz added she understands the position Coquille schools are in.

"There isn't a district in the state that isn't looking at tough decisions," she said.

District officials wanted to move the administrative office to a building that would remain open. If declining enrollment continues, elementary students could be moved to another building, and Lincoln closed.

"It would be the easiest to re-open," Gillaspie said.

The board's decision matches what students and parents selected in surveys. Of 151 surveys, 95 chose to move just the third-graders instead of adding more students to Coquille High School or closing the elementary school to classes. Board members passed the resolution unanimously without much discussion.

Parent Wendy Smith, who has three kids in school ranging from second to eighth grades, said she has concerns about whether Coquille Valley is appropriate for third-graders. She thinks the building's outdoor play areas better serve older children.

"I don't think with all the budget cuts, we have a lot of choices," she said.

Along with grade shuffling, administrative responsibilities will shift. Gillaspie will delegate some of her current duties to others.

"The decision's been made," Gillaspie said. "Now we can plan."

GET REAL wrote on Apr 23, 2009 10:51 AM:

I just do not understand this at all. I understand and realize that budget cuts are a must but our children are the ones who will suffer from this. I know how gossip gets started in this town but I was told, from a reliable source within the district that the district offices could have been moved to the high school without having to move any children around?? Why did we do this?? Oh, that's right, the administration did not want to walk that far to the bathroom right??? HMMMM!!! Something is wrong here. Our children will not be able to make in the "real" world later and all of you who are okay with this will be scratching your heads and wondering why?? Well, if you take a look in the mirror, the answer will be looking right back at you!!!1 As the parent of two young children in the Coquille School District, my heart is breaking for them.......

You all are crazy wrote on Apr 17, 2009 3:03 PM:

Do you people have any idea how schools are financed? Do you know what it costs to run a school? Financing is based on enrollment which is down in Coquille. I guess you don't read the papers either. Every school district is having huge budget issues, not just Coquille. Read and learn.

coquille resident for 23 years wrote on Apr 17, 2009 7:05 AM:

This is very upsetting to see.. we can spend 3000 plus every month per inmate in the prison system but we can not give our children of the future the education they need because there is not enough money. The coquille valley school dosent even have a school nurse anymore. I think the money is going to the wrong department. support our kids so they can have a bright and fun future.

Coquille Parent wrote on Apr 16, 2009 11:50 AM:

The sad truth of it is, no matter how much we complain we will still have to deal with this, so who is ready to put thier money where thier mouth is? Let's get together and build playground equipment appropriate for 3rd graders, lets volunteer to sweep, mop or do maintenance after school hours and on weekends, lets volunteer to coach not just drop our kids off, donate a car to raffle off, organize a can drive, buy a box of pencils ( or any office supplies!) and leave it at the school office. Do what you can with whatever you are able to do or give, we need it, now is the time for action not just words! Let's get it over our outrage and fix it, we're capable, who needs government right? Come on Coquille!!

POOR OBSURD wrote on Apr 16, 2009 12:35 AM:

How dare you blame the school district for your poor spelling! I am a Coquille graduate, as were my parents, grandparents and my children. No excuses, if you are uneducated it doesn't matter where you went to school. You have to WANT to learn to absorb anything. And there have been no incidents involving 8th graders and 4th graders at CVS. What grade levels do you think are on 65 passenger busses going back and forth to school every day? No matter how well you supervise children, they will occasionally act inappropriately. And no wonder with some of the posts I've seen here.

what about paid coaches wrote on Apr 15, 2009 2:28 PM:

How many paid coaches are there for the Marshfield football Team? For that matter, how many paid coaches in the county? I'm sure that sports are important enough that volunteers would step up for those positions, yet we lay off our school nurses, teachers and principal? When will the true needs of our children become priority?

Sunny wrote on Apr 15, 2009 11:00 AM:

The school district is looking at many, many more cuts. This process is just getting started. Please attend the budget meetings. There is a meeting on Apr. 23 to discuss a possible 4-Day school week.

Sunny wrote on Apr 15, 2009 10:58 AM:

I would like to invite How Dare You to run for a position on the school board. Nobody should complain if they aren't willing to help. As far as cuts to the DO, I'm sure it will be discussed during the budget meetings coming up.

OBSURD OH WAIT EXCUSE ME ABSURD wrote on Apr 15, 2009 10:57 AM:

Excuse me for spelling it wron. Maybe that is because I got my education in Coquille. It doesnt make a difference to me as to how they keep them seperated. The middle school doesnt have the same play equipment as the elementary school and other things. I think is nice that they keep them separated but it is still a BAD idea. No matter what anyone says, I will not change my opinion on that!!! How can you or anyone justify it. Did the district not see the need for cuts coming before now??? Why wait until now when we now have to but way to much money way to quickly!!! No matter what, I DO NOT AGREE WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Briana wrote on Apr 15, 2009 8:33 AM:

I highly doubt that there is NO interaction between all of the grades like some of the comments state. Also, I know in NB they moved the fifth and sixth grades to the junior high with the same promises. The younger grades will be kept seperate from the older grades. Go ask a student. They will tell you the younger kids see and interact with the older kids all the time. Their is too big of a difference in the maturity and knowledge to combine the young children with the older. The results are not good.

Outraged wrote on Apr 15, 2009 7:37 AM:

Be thankful that your children are getting an education at all. Most other countries dont provide public education at all. They provide a building and a teacher and the parents have to pay for everything, right down to the uniform that these children are expected to wear. They are taught the basics.Reading Writting and Mathmatics. We have become so spoiled that We want everything for our children and We want the government to pay for it all.

DEAR OBSURD wrote on Apr 15, 2009 7:37 AM:

First off, it is spelled ABSURD. And the Coquille people who came to the survey meeting voted for that, and the district honored their vote. If you need to see the results, call the district office or any board member they would send them to you. And in MANY other small districts grade levels are mixed, and no adverse effects. The older kids don't have the recesses that the smaller kids do, and they are in seperate areas. Why don't you come and see for yourself?

HOW DARE YOU wrote on Apr 15, 2009 7:31 AM:

To another parent...
As said before... I DO NOT CARE that they are separated from the other grades. My MAIN point is that they have made a wrong decision in moving third graders to the middle school. PERIOD!! It does not matter that they are seperated!! What matters is that by doing this, they are robbing our children. What they should do is step up to the plate and make the cuts where they should be made.... administration. This is just obsurd. My son will be 9 and in the third grade in a couple of years and nothing that anybody can say to me will make it ok for him to be attending school with an 8th grader!!!

INFORMATION wrote on Apr 15, 2009 7:31 AM:

If the DO and Lincoln are combined, there will be more DO cuts, as in only one secretary instead of the Lincoln School secretary and a DO secretary. Also one Supt/Principal, so saving a principal salary. And moving the DO from Jefferson saves $40,000+ per year.
As for bussing saving "hundreds of thousands" of dollars, we don't even spend $100,000 a year on sports bussing. And yes, maybe it will save a little classroom time, the only sport that I know of played exclusively on Friday is football. The rest have 2 or more games a week. Some on Tues, some on Thurs so it won't be that big of a deal.

bfrazier wrote on Apr 15, 2009 7:12 AM:

Meanwhile sports will continue to roll out thousands of miles on buses while athletes miss hundreds of hours of instruction... Who's driving this bus? A four day week, and intermural athletics would save hundreds yes HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars.

INFORMATION wrote on Apr 15, 2009 12:13 AM:

By state law, there has to be a supt for each district, unless districts consolidate and form one. And to do that you have to have 2-3 districts willing to join each other. Simple as that. And to the people saying supt's are "stealing" from our children. Not true. Coquille's supt will be the ONLY one in this area besides Powers to be both Supt and principal. And to those so worried about 3-8 configuration, why not look at other small districts. MP has k-6 and 7-12, Powers has the same. Many schools will be consolidating like this in the future. Instead of everyone crying wolf, why not try and see if it works?

Another Parent wrote on Apr 14, 2009 8:20 PM:

How Dare You should have attended the survey night (for lack of a better description) recently held at the Coquille District Office. Maybe after looking at the other "options" they would have a differnet opinion. Then again, maybe not. Have you ever been to the middle school? If not, arrange a tour, I am sure they would be happy to give you one. The 4th and 5th graders are separated from the 6th, 7th and 8th graders, as I am sure the 3rd graders will also be. My daughter went through there and I have no complaints.

coquille born and raised wrote on Apr 14, 2009 8:08 PM:

While I no longer live there in coquille, I did for some 20 odd years.

Just be glad your school dist is trying to trim the fat, and do things without telling you have to have a emergency levy to pick up the difference. My school dist was short where I live in idaho now, and we had a levy get passed on the basis "we have to have this to survive, period" They didnt explore the options you folks are. Raised house payment, that is escrowed with taxes, 21 dollars a month because of it.

So it could be worse...And by the way, our district is not much bigger then yours. Our population is 6,000 in our town.

Theres another way in Coquille wrote on Apr 14, 2009 8:06 PM:

I, for one, am thankful that I have chosen a different option for my kids. Coquille is fortunate that there is a wonderful little school named United Valley Christian Academy. They don't have all the bells and whistles, but they give my kids a solid education. I'm sure there are others who would disagree, but perhaps the public schools need to consider cutting electives and sports and concentrate more on the basics. Until then, I like the idea that my kids are being taught, and taught well, by people who are there because they love to teach, even without benefits and PERS.

How about a visit wrote on Apr 14, 2009 7:18 PM:

How Dare You, I have a question for you. Have you visited the CVMS and actually observed how it is structured? The older children are kept totally seperate from the younger children, therefore any questionable influence of an older child would not become an issue. /When you say we do not need two superintendents? I am only aware that we have one here in Coquille.

Job Hand wrote on Apr 14, 2009 4:46 PM:

Here's an easy way to save money at D-8. Simply lure George Johnson out of retirement (he still looks like he's in his early 50's anyway) and reinstate him as boss at Lincoln (he may even do it pro-bono for a while) and run a tape loop of the late and great Al Reiner during one of his classic rants from the 70's to restore order at CVMS (sorry but "Coquille Valley School" just sounds lame). Problem solved.

Coquille Mom wrote on Apr 14, 2009 4:25 PM:

I am very disappointed as well that there are not more cuts being made at the District Office. What a shame that they are putting their own needs ahead of the childrens!

South county Sally wrote on Apr 14, 2009 3:52 PM:

The reality of it all is that sooner or later our schools will be privatize and we'll just have to pay for children to get that proper education. It's clear that there is no help in sight from the state or the fedz. Very very sad!

What a Shame wrote on Apr 14, 2009 2:02 PM:

Too bad all of this is happening, but if we don't have the money, we don't have the money. Maybe after all of this is over, all the school districts in our area will learn that they have to live within their budget, but I don't have much faith in that either.
SPEND SPEND SPEND until it is gone or almost gone then WHINE WHINE WHINE and then bring the kids into the picture and try to make everyone feel sorry because little Jonny or little Susie has to do this or that, or can't do this or that in school anymore because we don't have the money. The kids are suffering all right, only because of the people in power within our school districts DON'T KNOW HOW TO MANAGE MONEY. I feel sorry for the kids, NOT the school district.

Briana wrote on Apr 14, 2009 1:59 PM:

I can NOT imagine third graders getting moved to middle school with the older grades. It seriously scares me to think of that. I hope Coquille figures something else out.

If the State of Oregon would get rid of our, so called governor, and especially all of the illegals, who are costing Oregonians millions of dollars a year, the rest of us would have plenty of money.

OBSURD wrote on Apr 14, 2009 1:26 PM:

I am not concerned with where the decision comes from, I am concerned with when the RIGHT decisions will start coming. Here is a suggestion, get rid of Gillespie and keep Entz. She has been great and she is a huge loss. I can not believe that the "voters" whomever they may be think it is okay to send a THIRD grader to school with an EIGHT grader. It is absolutely inappropriate. When our children, our future, is unable to make it in this society, all you people who decide where to make cuts, will be scratching you heads and wondering why?? Well, my friends, keep a mirror handy cause when you ask that question, you can pull out that mirror and look into it... You will quickly get your question answered!!!!!!!

Voucher System wrote on Apr 14, 2009 12:25 PM:

I am sick of the Management of our public Schools.By Unions and Beurocrats .I want to be able to take my tax dollars and additional money needed and take my child to a Private School. They have a Budget and Make it work. The public Schools have been screaming for more money every year since I graduated in the early 80s.They get more every year and it is never enough. They cut more and more our of the things I enjoyed as a Kid.In and out of the classroom. And they are more concerned with brainwashing our kids with their political agendas, instead of teaching then Reading ,Writing ,Math and History.

Sunny wrote on Apr 14, 2009 12:07 PM:

If you had attended the forum, you would have had a chance to make your opinion known. To me, this is less of a problem than to move 8th graders to the high school. Third graders can be segregated from 8th graders at the middle school

Teachers, what happened to solidarity? Why are you not taking a cut to save your coworkers job?

Losing Mrs Entz will be a big loss to the district, she has been wonderful.

Coquille Parent wrote on Apr 14, 2009 11:46 AM:

I agree that consolidating districts would be a step in the right direction. There are many counties in Oregon that have a consolidated or unified school district. But the decision does not rest with the superintendents or school boards. They can make the proposal but ultimately, I believe it requires a vote of the public. Encourage our districts to expolore this option!

HOW DARE YOU wrote on Apr 14, 2009 11:12 AM:

Doesnt anyone think that asking parents how they feel about their 3rd grader going to school with an 8th grader?? No!!! I am highly considering removing my children from the public school system!!!!! CUT FROM OTHER PLACES!!!!! It is to bad that our superintendents are so greedy that they choose to steal from our children rather that consolidate their positions and cut budgets that way!!!! It is a freaking shame and it is robbing our children of what they need so very much!!!!

HOW DARE YOU wrote on Apr 14, 2009 11:05 AM:

This situation continues to get more and more freaking ridiculous by the second. I can not believe that we are now moving third graders to the middle school. This in inappropriate in EVERY way. When will we open our eyes and make APPROPRIATE cuts. Like superintendents. We DO NOT need two in this area and two in the coos bay/north bend area. This is a wrong decision!!! Third graders should NOT be in school with eight graders!!! This is OBSURD!!! As the mother of two small children, I am extremely upset ad irriated by the continued bad decisions our school districts are making!!!!!!!!!
