North Bend avenged its loss in the state semifinals last year, beating visiting Newport 10-5 in a nonleague game on Saturday.

Bryce Weidman and Jarrod Lincoln combined for 11 strikeouts with no walks for the Bulldogs, who kept the Cubs off the scoreboard until the fifth inning.

Meanwhile, Dalton Iveans went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Toby Ridenour was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Austin Parker was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Both Lincoln and Sean Jany had doubles for the Bulldogs.

Tristan Metcalf had a single, double and home run for Newport, and finished with three RBIs and two runs.

North Bend suffered two of its three losses last year to Newport, including in the state semifinals. The 5-4 setback in front of a huge crowd at Clyde Allen Field last spring snapped a 22-game win streak for the Bulldogs, who had run through the Far West Leauge with a perfect 15-0 record.

Newport went on to win the state title.

The Bulldogs open league play at home against Brookings-Harbor on Tuesday.

“It’s nice to get some at-bats before we go into Tuesday,” said North Bend coach Brad Horning.

Pirates swept

Marshfield got a home run in each game, but not enough additional offense, dropping a doubleheader to host Cottage Grove 5-3 and 9-3 on Saturday.

Cody Dew had a homer in the opener for the Pirates and Elliott Aurdahl went deep in the nightcap.

Aurdahl and Andrew Messenger each had two hits in the second game.

The Pirates, just into the three-games-a-week Midwestern League schedule, used three pitchers in the opener and four in the nightcap to save arms for this week’s schedule, which starts with a game at Churchill today.

SOFTBALL

Pirates take two

Marshfield swept a pair of five-inning nonleague softball games from visiting Cottage Grove on Saturday, beating the Lions 16-1 and 12-2.

In the opener, Brittney Young pitched a one-hitter and led Marshfield’s offense by going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.

Brianna George had a triple, three runs and four RBIs, while Megan Meador was 3-for-3 with two runs. Kara Young and Tiffany Wiley had two runs each.

In the nightcap, Rise Campbell had three hits, while Meador and Katherine Nicholls each went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Winning pitcher Sam Sundet also had two hits and two RBIs.

The Pirates host Churchill in a Midwestern League battle today.

Warriors top Tigers

North Douglas took advantage of Bandon’s struggles on the mound, beating the Tigers 20-9 in five innings Saturday.

The Warriors had just three hits, but had 25 batters reach base with walks in the win.

TRACK & FIELD

Jim Robinson Twilight

Marshfield’s Caleb Kruse won two events and nearly a third at the Jim Robinson Twilight Invitational at Roseburg on Saturday.

Kruse won the high hurdles in 15.00 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 39.82. He was second in the triple jump with a leap of 45-91⁄2. Blake Kemp placed in the top six behind Kruse in all three events.

Trevor Berrian of North Bend won the 1,500 meters in a season-best 4 minutes, 6.33 seconds.

Marshfield’s Ryan Scoville was second in the 100 meters and seventh in the 200 and teamed with Kruse, Kemp and Shane Daly to place second in the 4x100-meter relay in a speedy 43.88 seconds.

Moriah Roberge cleared a season-best 12 feet, 3 inches to win the girls pole vault, with North Bend’s Sammie Clark second (11-0). Roberge also finished second in the javelin.

Brookings-Harbor Rotary Invitational

Bandon’s girls won just two events, but had enough depth to take the team title at the 12-school Brookings-Harbor Rotary Invitational on Saturday.

Beth Castro won both the pole vault and high jump for the Tigers, who scored 130.5 points to beat the host Bruins by 36.5.

Sydney Snook won the 800 and 1,500 meters for Gold Beach, while Pacific’s Jesse Culley won the shot put and javelin and Brookings-Harbor’s Catherine Bones swept the hurdles races. Coquille’s Allison Cook won the shot put.

Brittainy Chown won the long jump, triple jump, 100 and 200 for McKinleyville, one of four California schools in the meet.

Del Norte won the boys portion of the meet with 136.5 points, while Brookings-Harbor was second with 91.5.

South Coast winners included Pacific’s Julian Carter in the javelin and Reed Brady in the triple jump, Brookings-Harbor’s Linden Loren in the 400 and Gold Beach’s Miles Bernadett-Peters in the 3,000. Brookings-Harbor won both relays.

Maynard Mai Invitational

Reedsport freshman Ashton Mann won both sprint races in the Maynard Mai Invitational at Glide on Saturday, with impressive times of 12.78 seconds in the 100 and 26.73 in the 200.

Mann also anchored the Braves to a win in the 4x100-meter relay as Reedsport finished fifth with 62.5 points in the 16-school meet. Cascade Christian won with 100.75 points.

Chelsea Standley of Powers was second to Mann in the 200, third in the 100 and won the long jump.

Reedsport’s Ismael Osorio won the discus and was second in the shot put. He was the only boy from the South Coast to win an event.

Douglas took the team title with 98.5 points.
