Motorists driving near the corner of Broadway Avenue and 14th Street in North Bend on Tuesday had better watch out for pedestrians.

Those who don’t might get a ticket from the North Bend Police Department during its first of four pedestrian crosswalk enforcement operations.

During the operation from 10 a.m. to noon, a plain-clothed officer will cross the street, while other officers stop drivers who fail to stop. An officer will provide drivers who fail to follow the law with information regarding the responsibilities.

The primary focus of the program is to raise awareness of pedestrian safety issues and to reduce the number of crashes within the city limits of North Bend, a police department press release said.

Violation of the Oregon pedestrian law is a Class B traffic violation, which is punishable by a $242 fine.

For more information, those interested can contact Officer Bill Downing at 756-3161.

Seat belts were invented in the late 1800's. Cars go a lot faster now.

Perhaps the effect of wearing them is much the same as wearing a condom. The outcome of not wearing a seat belt is usually far worse then not wearing a condom. Unless the kid is really ugly!

How much more would we pay for car insurance if all law enforcement neglected to issue citations to us "morons."

who said a word about state troopers? it's north bend officers doing the sting. and-- quit griping and call officer downing if you want more information.

What What wrote on Apr 19, 2009 11:16 AM:

Frog: Exactly what do state troopers do other than issue tickets to "morons?" State troopers are absolutely worthless. They could probably make a lot more money for the state if they were in the vicinity of Fred Meyer weekday mornings issuing citations for speeding and unsafe lane changes. What exactly do State troopers do other than issue tickets like meter maids? tsk, tsk.

State Troopers have more to do than to issue tickets to morons....

Be our friend wrote on Apr 17, 2009 9:01 PM:

The money would be better spent dealing with real criminals vs a cross walk sting. Where are the cops when you need assistance? A friend of mine called the police when someone trespassed on her property and would not leave. She felt her life was in danger and was told by the police that there was nobody to send. But they can earn overtime to operate cross walk stings? This is not informative or educational, this is entrapment. Use the time and money to investigate real crime!!

This is why people now view law enforcement as the enemy. I remember the days when they used to be our friends and neighbors. We invited them to our home. This was before law enforcement treated everyone as a criminal. Now many law enforcement are criminals themeselves. What has happened to us as a society?

I for one greatly appreciate what the North Bend police officers are doing to increase awareness regarding crosswalks. I utilize a wheelchair and I am difficult to see, and have nearly been hit on more than one occasion.
If the sting was not advertised, you bloggers would be upset that it was being done in in secret and in an attempt to entrap drivers! It's a public awareness campaign-did you think that the advertisements may increase the awareness of people who may not be utilizing the roads where the stings are located? Please don't be so petty.

reality check wrote on Apr 16, 2009 7:21 PM:

I agree with "WHY." Why don't they have a bake sale, or better yet, do like the State Troopers do: pull someone over, issue a bogus ticket, and then lie about it in court? The Judges in this area use a logic that defies reality and will readily assign a hefty fine for the most insignificant "infractions." Why don't these worthless "law enforcement officers" just leave this minor traffic baloney alone and go find some real criminals? PS Sheriffs are cool.

I propose that we should look both ways while crossing.....DUUUUHHHH....How about if you see someone blindly walking across the street without paying attention you speed up and try to hit them.

Thanks "Q". I apreciate you answering my question.

What a Shame -

You can go to the Oregon Department of Transportation website and it should give you that information. The ORS are too long to fit into the 200 words permitted here.

Drive safe!

Q wrote on Apr 14, 2009 12:30 PM:

For more info - go to the Oregon Dept. of Transportation Website - below is a recap of what is expected and the ORS:

Under Oregon law (ORS 801.220), a crosswalk exists at all public street intersections, whether marked with paint, or unmarked. However, all crosswalks between intersections (mid-block) must be marked with white painted lines. Here is a link to a more complete definition.

Under Oregon law (ORS 811.360), drivers must stop and remain stopped for pedestrians in crosswalks until they have cleared the driver's lane and the adjacent lane.

When a vehicle is turning, drivers must stop and remain stopped for pedestrians until they have cleared the lane into which the driver is turning, plus at least six feet of the adjacent lane if it is an intersection with a signal, or the entire adjacent lane where there is no signal.

If the pedestrian is blind and using a cane or guide dog, the driver must stop and remain stopped until the pedestrian is completely across the road.

To North Bender -

Just thought I'd let you know there are bad eggs everywhere. And I can tell you that yes, I have been pulled over more times in Portland than I ever had in the Bay area.

But what I can ALSO tell you is that I never in my life have been treated with such disrespect as I have from the police force in Coos County.

Just be glad they are posting the information on the sting so you aren't so surprised when you have some cop staring you in the face screaming. Now THAT is one thing I can say about Portland - they have more serious things to worry about.

Now, if you're speeding 25 miles over the speedlimit, are taking U turns like it's nobodies business, or are running red lights with your headlights off... YES - THEY ARE GOING TO PULL YOU OVER. And don't be surprised if they're not too nice about it.

Case in point - follow the rules of the road and you wouldn't have to worry about it. Nice thought, huh?

What a Shame wrote on Apr 14, 2009 9:22 AM:

Would someone put on here the ORS. number on this subject please. Do you have to wait until the person gets completly across the street, to the center line or what?

What a Shame wrote on Apr 14, 2009 9:15 AM:

I think this is a great idea, but why do the police always announce when they are having these stings and sometimes even on what intersection. This is wrong. Just do it without telling anyone.

Want to know wrote on Apr 13, 2009 5:20 PM:

On a number of occassions I have stopped for a pedestrian only to have them angrily wave me on. The law says you stop if a pedestrian is on sidewalk thinking about crossing? or does the pedestrian have to step off the curb to legally have the right of way? FYI I always stop for pedestrians.

north bender wrote on Apr 13, 2009 4:50 PM:

Don't like our cops? Get pulled over in portland, then you'll like our cops.

teach the pedestrians wrote on Apr 13, 2009 4:32 PM:

They are the ones that need to watch for drivers I cant tell you how many times I have stopped for someone standing at the curb so I stop and then they back away from the curb. THAT IS ANNOYING !! We try to do the right thing yet they play dumb. But in the end I think its making people more aware of crosswalks. So good job on that.

Phil wrote on Apr 13, 2009 1:51 PM:

I'm for it. I often see drivers ignore pedestrians.

DUH... wrote on Apr 13, 2009 12:24 PM:

I drove by the crosswalk today with a bright yellow sign stating that they were going to do this. I thought how dumb is this to let the public know that this was happening? And now, It is in the paper! Wouldn't the element of surprise be a better way of catching people doing something illegal? Everyone with a drivers license should know that you stop at crosswalks when there are pedestrians in them. If they do not stop, they deserve to be ticketed. Don't warn them ahead of time, that is just plain STUPID!!

asimov wrote on Apr 13, 2009 10:56 AM:

once again, do the police advertise where their next DRUG sting is taking place? why warn the drivers, it seems that is just a waste of resources to do extra patrols for safety while WARNING the drivers where to look out for cops...sheesh...I bet the rest of the world thinks we are intellectually challenged...

Why wrote on Apr 13, 2009 10:55 AM:

Couldn't they just have a cake sale?

Way to fight crime, right.

When I was a child our parents railed against the Commie Chinese for just such actions.

Time for crosswalk stings, but if your property gets robbed, no one comes.

Go figure.
