County reports whooping cough

Monday, April 13, 2009 |
The Coos County Public Health Department has received four recent reports of Pertussis, also known as whooping cough in the area.
The department is recommending routine immunizations for prevention including a 5-dose DTap for all children under 7 years old; for adolescents at least 11 years old; and for adults who received a tetanus booster more than five years ago.
Characterized by spasms of sever coughing that last from six to 10 weeks, antibiotics may help to prevent infection when close contact is made in a confined place shared with an infected person. Antibiotics are recommended for prevention in infants older than a year, household members, pregnant women in their third trimester, childcare providers and pediatric healthcare workers.
The Health Department and other health care providers will identify close contacts and recommend treatment, a press release said.
For more information, those interested can contact a health care provider or the health department at 756-2020, ext. 510.
