Beware of pedestrians

Friday, April 10, 2009 |
The return of sunny, warm weather will set off a stampede for the outdoors, which, in turn, should make anyone on or near the area's highways and byways more vigilant.
Drivers, pedestrians, skateboarders and bicyclists will all be out in force and need to look out for each other. It's important they obey the rules of the road and show respect for other users.
For their part, motorists need to remember bicyclists - and pedestrians - have a right to the road. Recent changes in state law require motorists give bicyclists a buffer of at least three feet when they pass them.
Unfortunately, sharing the road often isn't as neat and tidy as it sounds in driver's manuals and other places.
The spring, summer and early fall should be a healthier time for our community as a whole, as more people get out of their houses and exercise. Let's keep it healthy by showing a healthy respect for those who deserve it, and by watching out for those not watching out for themselves.
