Trail's history is highlight of Saturday hike
Friday, April 10, 2009 11:06 AM PDT
Fred Bowen and Walt Schroeder will host a hike and highlight history of the Illinois River Trail near Agness on Saturday. The hike will begin at Oak Flat, three miles south of Agness on the first road to the right just past the Illinois River Bridge.
Hikers will walk at a leisurely rate and learn about the history of the area. The entire hike, ending at Buzzard’s Roost, is an approximately six-mile round trip and is a relatively easy walk. The full hike will end at about 4:30 p.m. Hikers can leave and retrace their steps from anywhere along the way after notifying the leaders they are leaving.
Dogs will not be allowed.
Participants are advised to bring a sack lunch, water and to wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots.
A second Oak Flat hike will take place on April 24 but will not go beyond the Oak Flat meadow.
Hikers can gather at the Southwestern Oregon Community College building at the Fairgrounds/Event Center in Gold Beach at 8:30 a.m. to pool transportation and caravan to the site or meet at Oak Flat at 9:45 a.m. Sign up with SOCC in Brookings, Gold Beach or Port Orford before the hike to save time on Saturday.
