Clothing fire damages Coos Bay apartment

Thursday, April 09, 2009 |
A Coos Bay apartment was damaged Wednesday morning when clothing left on an electrical baseboard heater began to smolder and smoke.
At 6:38 a.m., the Coos Bay Fire Department received a report of smoke filling the apartment, at 705 S. Empire Blvd. above the Lighthouse Grocery. Battalion Chief Mark Anderson said 22 firefighters, two engines and two support units went to the scene, where they extinguished the small smoldering fire. He said no one was hurt and the apartment sustained less than $500 in damage to the clothing, heater and some smoke damage to a wall. Firefighters remained on scene for about 31 minutes.
"It's a housekeeping issue," Anderson said. "It was obviously unintentional. ... Just combustibles too close to a heating source."
