Ocean Air considers charter service

A North Bend aviation company could offer scheduled charter flights between North Bend and Portland within a couple of weeks -Êbut only if it gets a good response on a survey.

Ocean Air Aviation's co-owner Denise Langerveld said the service could start up anytime depending on responses to a public survey that will be offered online and at the Home and Garden Show on April 17-19 at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon in Coos Bay.

"We have the ability to do northbound service. We have to see what everyone wants," said Langerveld, who owns Ocean Air with her husband, Ed Langerveld.

New flights could be offered on two-engine aircraft that seat nine people.

Langerveld said company officials decided to look into the business fearing the Coos County Airport District might lose northbound flights through SkyWest Airlines.

"If SkyWest doesn't offer service to Portland that would be devastating," Langerveld said.

The district had been paying the airline up to $58,000 monthly throughout the winter months for it to break even.

Survey questions will ask residents about their needs concerning air service at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport. Langerveld said she expects a one-way ticket could cost approximately $200, with no extra fees or charges for parking, additional bags, snacks or last-minute reservations.

Last month, SkyWest began offering one-way fares as low as $99. Prices increase if reservations are made closer to the departure. A flight, with taxes and fees, costs $189 today for a Friday departure, according to the Web site united.com.

SkyWest spokeswoman Marissa Snow said the airline is committed to keeping air service in the community.

It is "a critical component to any community's economic development and survival," Snow said in an e-mail. "SkyWest provides an important link to not only a major airline code to Portland and beyond, but to San Francisco and beyond as well through the United code."

North Bend airport spokesman Matthew Jarvis, who the airport hired last week, said the agency supports investigations for potential flights. "If either one wanted to charter, that does fall within their lease agreements and the airport would support their efforts to increase their business," Jarvis said.

Ocean Air moved some of its operations to the old Southwest Oregon Regional Airport terminal in December after commercial airport operations moved into a new terminal. The company has Federal Aviation Administration air carrier certificates, one each for a passenger and medical division.

The survey is scheduled to be online this week at the Ocean Air Web site, http://www.oceanairaviation.com.

I had to laugh as I read that a "reasonable fare" for going to Los Angeles is $400. I'm flying round trip from PDX to Germany for $400. Please, some geography major on here please tell Ida how many thousands of miles further Germany is than Los Angeles, then I'd like to hear from her why the fare is the same.

Oh, and check out www.ryanair.com, and check the prices of flights all over Europe once you are over there. Explain why flights much further than OTH to PDX are basicallly $50 round trip. Considering fuel is insanely more expensive in Europe than it is in the US, why are their flights 1/4 of the price?

tanzyragweed wrote on Apr 12, 2009 1:10 PM:

It would be helpful to their business if flights could partner with other partner, so we could get flights to connect to popular destinations. Currently you can purchase a ticket to portland, but then you have to purchase a seperate ticket to go from PDX to where you want to go. I drove to EUG instead and made a non-stop flight to miss the hassle and extra charges

I have to drive to EUG to get to JNU

Great solution. For essentially the same price as a commercial flight to an actual gate at PDX you will now be able to get to the general aviation terminal. You will have to drag your bags to some sort of shuttle to the terminal and deal with security. While Skywest may be bad, this solution is infinitely worse.

Marvin H: Score 0 for Fred Kirby, only because we don't give minus numbers. A charter flight is no solution to the individual traveler, business or pleasure, unless you can get 8 more poeple to fill the seats on that plane at the exact schedule in which you want to travel. This proposed solution is complete inadequate to address our community's need for regular flights to PDX. Fred Kirby is a legend in his own mind, but hasn't show the public anything but dogma thus far. Please don't waste a vote on this man for any office for which he might run.

A slip of the tongue never happens? How do you get confused out of the blue that some small time airline is pulling out? OUT OF THE BLUE? Nope I don't buy it. This was a classic case of loose lips. There are legal consequences for what happened. This is a publicly held company, information released must be done so within a formal press release by the company. Not a night time news piece. So, as a favor the piece is retracted.

Thank you Editor for speaking up. The locals in this town do NOT WANT to support local businesses or listen to the truth. They just want to fuel the rumor mills! Horizon wanted out YEARS ago and refused to supply a southbound flight in hopes that another airline would come in so they could leave!

Yes, KEZI did report in late March that Skywest would pull out of North Bend. If you search KEZI's Web site, however, you'll find this correction:

"NORTH BEND, Ore.--We need to correct a story we ran yesterday in which we reported that SkyWest Airlines was planning on leaving the North Bend Airport by the end of the summer.

"Our report stated the airline had made an announcement to stop service, which it did not do.

"It was also stated that SkyWest currently fuels it's planes in Portland and San Francisco - which is true - but they also fuel at North Bend Airport."

This should clear up the confusion about that particular rumor.

I posted this nearly 2 weeks ago. KEZI news reported SkyWest is pulling out first of summer. No local reporting has been done. Why? Is someone trying to hold off on breaking the news until after the election is over? Sure feels that way to me.

Did anyone else see the comment that the District has hired "Matt Jarvis" of local radio news fame as their "Mouthpiece" --- where in the budget do they have money to hire a "spokesperson" - Are you kidding. I guess when you have your foot in your mouth all the time it's hard to get the words out!

Local Frequent Flyer wrote on Apr 6, 2009 4:34 PM:

Steve. You dont undestand what I am saying. Yes i know that Skywest and Delta hava partership. But we are stuck with the United partnership which doesnt code share. Therefore you can not make a good connection in pdx, because United doesnt partner with Delta or Continental, or American, which Delta, and Alaska and Horizon do.

Grow up Mik. Horizon wanted to leave years ago. Come on locals ... move on. Support SkyWest and our local airport. Quit complaining and just accept change. I for one use SkyWest and have never had a problem with service out of our Regional Airport!

Well then you have more money than the rest of us. Even if I had it, why would I spend $200 to $400 more than from Eugene?

Also, Eugene's board didn't screw their Horizon contract up like ours did, giving Horizon a way out of the loophole.

Just checked again, and it's $700 from OTH.

Forget it, this will now be the private world of Bandon Dunes and their guests. That was the purpose anyway.

Editors note wrote on Apr 6, 2009 4:03 PM:

In checking with officials from SkyWest Airlines today, they said the rumors of canceled service are false. It appears to be a computer programming problem.
"It's a minor technical glitch for that market, and we're working as fast as possible to have it fixed," Jeff Kovick, SkyWest spokesman.
"We hope to have it resolved very quickly so our customers can book travel."

Skywest and Delta are already partnered. I think it is good to have alternatives in the General Aviation and Local Commercial sectors. I don’t think it will replace the Nationwide Commercial providers, but I wish them success. Now, maybe there is a block on reservation on-line more than two months out. I can not get a reservation from PDX to OTH for anytime in June either. Or does Skywest know something they are not telling us.

Eugene to Fresno? under $300.

North Bend to Fresno? $450.

The new plan is to run private charter flights only out of OTH.

Ever try chartering a flight?

So now Bandon Dunes and their golfers won't have to bother with us Unwashed Masses.

It's over for those of us without business accounts.

I called SkyWest Airlines to try and find out what's going on...they have no information. Something doesn't sound right. No flights to or from San Francisco or Portland after June 3? Sounds like something fishy to me.

Ocean Air Aviation had BETTER take over flights because after June 3, there are no more flights between North Bend and Portland, or San Francisco. Go to the United Airlines website and try to make a reservation. NOTHING after June 3!

Have all the flights from North Bend to Portland and San Francisco been cancelled after June 3 of this year? When I called United Airlines, that's what they said. Marvin H wrote on Apr 6, 2009 12:28 PM:

The World criticized Fred Kirby for his suggestion but he was correct at his web site. Entrepreneur Ocean Air recognizes the need for reasonably priced service and is prepared to offer service to a potentially large market. Score one each for Kirby and Ocean Air zero for the World.

It wont work. It wont work. It wont work. What this district needs to do, it terminate the United Express/Skywest, and make it a Delta Connection/Skywest. Delta is partners with Alaska/Horizon, and would allow more connections, both North and South. I cant believe that Pickering as not commented yet. lol
