Two people died in the region following single-vehicle crashes over the weekend, one south of Bandon and another east of Scottsburg.

Langlois' David L. Allen, 74, was hurt when his northbound 2005 Jeep Cherokee crossed the Highway 101 center line near milepost 279 at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, sped across the southbound lane and crashed into a large tree, an Oregon State Police press release said. Medics took him to Southern Coos Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His passenger, Richard A. Standiford, 45, of Langlois, also was taken to Southern Coos Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said Standiford was treated and released.

Police aren't sure what caused the Jeep to crash. Emergency responders restricted traffic to one lane for about three hours following the crash. Both Allen and Standiford were wearing seat belts and both airbags inflated, a press release said. Bandon Fire Department, Bay Cities Ambulance and the Oregon Department of Transportation responded.

Several hours later, a Eugene woman died after her motorcycle crashed on a county road in Douglas County.

Diane E. Detuerk, 57, was riding a 2009 BMW motorcycle south on Weatherly Creek Road when she attempted to turn left onto state Highway 38. She lost control of the motorcycle and hit a guardrail, an Oregon State Police press release said.

Detuerk was having trouble breathing and had a large laceration on her face when emergency responders arrived, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office press log. She died at the scene.

Detuerk was wearing a helmet and riding equipment. A riding partner traveling a short distance ahead of her was not involved in the accident.

Traffic on Highway 38 was closed about 90 minutes following the 5:30 p.m. crash. Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Coos County Medical Examiner's Office, Scottsburg Fire Department, Lower Umpqua Hospital Ambulance, and Oregon Department of Transportation helped at the motorcycle crash site.

OSP troopers from Coos Bay are investigating both crashes.

OK, since some people still think there is no such thing as an accident, and that OLD people are mostly to blame, invest in some bubble wrap! Wrap yourself up and none of us over 30 (unless that's old too!) will be able to hurt YOU. My 75 yr old mom-never a ticket and never an accident. Stick that in your pipe.

To What's THis...
All of us that "work" for AARP here on the coast are volunteers. If someone told you that you are not disabled if you drive it only had to do with taxes not your true disability. They were not correct or else you misunderstood. Also... they are just a volunteer like the rest of us....not a "top person".

I Can NOT believe some of your amazing rude comments. I am 25 was in a very bad accident 4 years ago and had to be brought back to life. The accident was considered my fault and i was the only person in the accident who was hurt. I had a 4 month old baby to raise....eventhough it was my fault it was an ACCIDENT!!!!! I would never purposely cause harm to anyone and to wish death on someone and to say people shouldnt drive because they are elderly you are completely ignorant and may god have mercy on your souls!!!!

to what's this:
You have no clue what you are talking about. If what you are saying is true then they pulled the wool over your eyes and are sitting back and laughing at you. I am an insurance agent and AARP has nothing to do with SS or disibility in the least. Educate yourself.

Back to the origional comment...."if you drift into oncoming traffic"... obviously, if you drift it could be considered an accident. If you 'drove' into the oncoming traffic it would not be considered and accident. A person already dead from a heart attack or dying from one cannot consciously drive, therefore anything that happens to the car after the point of unconsciousness becomes an accident. We are all going to die. No one knows at what age or circumstance that will be. Carelessness is a the usual cause of any accident. I was scared to death for people around my Mom cause she drove until way past her capabilities. DMV and Doctors did NOT!! even begin to facilitate license removel, but they did provide her with a handicap plate and placard!

The incident I was referring two was after traffic started moving. Two bikes passed us and about 6 other cars on the Scottsburg stretch of 38. You must be talking about some other bikers. These two were just idiots. There is no excuse to pass 6 or more cars, when they are all going the speed limit.

TO JUST ME;;Why would I need to talk to that person again? She already made that statement to me.She is a top person in the AARP group here.As I went to have my taxes done by them, and I marked down that I was disabled. She asked if I could drive, and I said yes, although it's very limited. She informed me that if I was able to drive, that I was not considered disabled.I don't agree with her,but they must have other views.

Just Me wrote on Apr 8, 2009 8:12 AM:

This comment is to Whats This, you better talk to AARP again, I am also disabled due to back problems which does not effect my ability to drive. I collect social security disability. Am I supposed to curl up and die and never go any where? I am unable to work because of it but not drive. Whoever is telling you this is wrong. Oh and by the way, I do have insurance.

Safety First: "the guys who passed us deserve to die if they get in an accident"

I was there also and they only seemed to be going fast because WE WERE NOT MOVING. I think wishing death to anyone is reflective of a cruel personality.

Although I agree with you that a full helmet provides more protection, there is no need to be smug about it.

ANDY: The accident was on Saturday.

WHATS THIS wrote on Apr 7, 2009 10:59 AM:

TO THE DISABLED WHO STILL DRIVE> AARP REPRESENTITIVE TOLD ME IF I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THAT I WAS NOT DISABLED.SO,WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE COLLECTING DISABILTY AND STILL DRIVING?AARP CLAIM TO BE FOR ALL KINDS OF CAUSES.GO FIGURE.

To Clif wrote on Apr 7, 2009 8:57 AM:

You are crazy, I am 56 and on social security due to a back injury, should my license be revoked? I have NEVER had a ticket in my life! I have had my license since I was 16 years old. Can you say that? What are you going to do when you are that "old" person? Are you going to walk into DMV and just hand over your license to them and say here ya go I'm to old to drive anymore so take it back? I doubt it. Accidents happen everyday in every age group. But every time an elderly person is involved people jump on the bandwagon and start slamming them. It really isn't fair for people to do that!

t wrote on Apr 7, 2009 7:29 AM:

Clif,
Your comment was rediculous. My husband recieves ss for a joint replacement which made it impossible for him to perform his line of work. That has nothing to do with his ability to drive. I hope you never fall victim to anything that may make it impossible for you to do your job. Should you then have to lose your license and independance as well? Get a life.

Deb wrote on Apr 6, 2009 7:23 PM:

HELLO>>> maybe you should stay off the roads if you have a problem with older folks. An offhanded "prayers to family and friends" does not excuse your rude attitude.

Clif wrote on Apr 6, 2009 4:25 PM:

Old people on the highways is tantamount to a highway full of drunken drivers. Drivers who collect social security should instantly have their licenses revoked.

Andy wrote on Apr 6, 2009 3:02 PM:

I dont see a date listed for either of these accidents.Am I missing something?

CB Lifer wrote on Apr 6, 2009 2:53 PM:

"Hello" WHAT?? Age has nothing to do with it!! Good Grief, check statistics on how many more accidents are caused by young people! How old are you? I am 52 years old, and have NEVER had an accident. My mother is 75 and has never had an accident. What is your problem, do you just not like old people?

Mr E wrote on Apr 6, 2009 1:29 PM:

I'm a math guy, not a writer, but it helps if you're a bit more consistent with the way you phrase things involving injuries/death in articles.

If someone dies as a direct result of injuries, please state that they were fatally wounded, not "hurt." It is easier to keep track of something like that, when there are multiple (and varied degrees of) injuries.

Maybe I'm just seeing the forest for the trees, but having more clarity and consistency in one's writing makes for an easier-to-digest article.

t wrote on Apr 6, 2009 1:21 PM:

Mr. Allen had a massive heart attack and died instantly. That can happen at any age.

WHERE DO YOU GET THE NERVE TO COMMENT ON SOMETHING YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. I CANT BELIEVE YOU ARE SO PERFECT. TWO FAMILIES ARE GREIVING AND YOU HAVE THE GUTS TO SAY SOMETHING SO ABSURD. PLEASE THINK ABOUT THESE FAMILIES WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING SO PERFECT.

age discrimination wrote on Apr 6, 2009 12:20 PM:

age shouldn't be the discrimated against. in the case of the bandon accident, this is an area that has seen a large # of wrecks over the years. It's narrow, windy, congested, blind corners - all factors that could affect any of us. Don't assume based on age. Wait for the police report.

Safety First wrote on Apr 6, 2009 11:50 AM:

It's sad to say but this woman could have survived, If she had been wearing a full face helmet. I was right behind this accident after it happened and waited an hour. Once, taffic got started two choppers passed us and a whole line of cars. they must have been going a hundred miles an hour. Wearing those skull caps that only keep your brains in your head. But they don't protect your face. I always wear a full helmet and it saved my life a year ago. Still $9000 in hospital bills and $6000 in damage. I know accidents can happen when you least expect it. But, the guys who passed us deserve to die if they get in an accident.

HELLO wrote on Apr 6, 2009 11:00 AM:

Another unfortunate happening.Age plays a big role in these happenings. When is the DMV going to do something about it?If you drift into oncoming lane, that is not a accident.Prayers to his family and friends.
