Southwestern Oregon Community College golfer Sam Ayotte was the individual medalist in the recent Cavalier Spring Classic at Tri Mountain Golf Course in Washington, beating several players from four-year schools.

Ayotte had rounds of 71 and 71 to finish 2-under par for the tournament, winning by two strokes over three other players, including teammate Nick Fasiano.

The Lakers finished second in the team race with 595 strokes for two rounds, trailing only host Concordia (588) and beating nine other teams, nearly all four-year colleges.

Andrew VonLossow tied for 21st at 153, while Blaine Corkill tied for 44th (160) and Terry Morrell tied for 48th (162). In the second round, Ayotte, Fasiano, VonLossow and Corkill all had scores of 75 or better.

Southwestern’s women did not have a complete team score.

Melissa Blamires finished 16th with rounds of 94 and 86. Haley McKinley had a two-day total of 235, while Heather Parker scored 100 on the first day, but did not complete her second round.

Track and field

Southwestern had six athletes compete at the recent Oregon Invitational in Eugene.

Dianne Chong was the top finisher for the Lakers, taking third place in the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, 21⁄4 inches.

Kelsey Johnson was eighth in the long jump (15-5) and Francesca Frasier set a new school record in the 1,500 with a time of 5:04.48, which placed her sixth in her heat.

Tamara Beardsley was ninth in the hammer with a throw of 123-3, while Steven Sanders placed ninth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:07.57.

Melanie McLauchlin had an effort of 38-73⁄4 in the shot put and Justin Smith ran the high hurdles in 16.84.

That event was followed two days later by the Linfield Multi-Event meet in McMinnville.

Johnson became an automatic qualifier for the NWAACC championships in the heptathlon, scoring 3,210 points and placing seventh overall. It was her first heptathlon.

Chong placed 10th with 2,858 points, just under the 3,000-point automatic qualifying standard. Sarah Smith was 11th with 2,526 points and Maria Ciccarelli was 13th with 2,091.

The athletes competed in miserable weather on Monday, coach Dan Neal said.

“I was happy to see the kids come back the next day and give it their best,” he said.

For Southwestern’s men, both Justin Smith and Trace Feemster failed to make their opening height in the high jump, which kept them from earning NWAACC-qualifying scores.

Feemster still managed to score 4,243 points, and has a good shot at the qualifying standard of 5,000 if he has a chance to compete in another decathlon, Neal said.

Smith, meanwhile, hit the first hurdle hard, injuring his knee, in the 110 high hurdles, and was unable to compete in the pole vault or 1,500, Neal said. He still scored 3,473 points and has a good shot at qualifying after he recovers from the knee injury.

The Lakers are at the Willamette Open today and Saturday.

Baseball team drops three

Southwestern’s baseball team opened NWAACC play with three agonizing losses, all on their home diamond.

The Lakers dropped a pair of one-run games to Clackamas on Saturday, by scores of 12-11 and 2-1.

On Tuesday, Southwestern led Lane 5-2 entering the ninth inning, but the Titans scored 10 times and held on for a 12-8 win. The second game was rained out.

The Lakers are 2-8 on the season, with a doubleheader at Mount Hood on Saturday.

Softball rained out

Southwestern’s softball team was rained out during its tournament last weekend and is in Mount Vernon, Wash., this weekend for a tournament.

The Lakers begin South Region play Tuesday at Clark and have their first league home game next Friday against Lower Columbia.
