The South Coast ESD and the Cascade Regional Autism Program are hosting parent groups and workshops in April, which is Autism Awareness Month.

ESD will host a workshop on Educational & Behavioral Strategies for Higher Functioning Students on the Autism Spectrum from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at its center at 1350 Teakwood Ave., Coos Bay.
ESD also can provide organizations with personalized training about autism. The organization Autism Speaks defines autism as a "complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person's lifetime," an ESD press release said. One in the 150 individuals are diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined.

Harley-Davidson collects coats for kids
The Highway 101 Harley-Davidson, 536 S. Second Street in Coos Bay, is accepting new and slightly used coats for a "Coats for Kids" fundraiser. The effort runs through the end of April.
On Saturday, people can stop by the store and get a bowl of clam chowder with each donation.
Coats will be distributed to needy children in the Coos, Lane and Douglas school districts through designated school liaisons.

Gardeners plan compost talk
The South Coast Community Garden Association and the Coos County Master Gardeners are hosting a talk on compost as part of a series of talks on starting a kitchen garden.
Spring Gardening Series guest speaker Jennifer Ewing will present the seminar. The Port Orford woman has taught many gardening classes and manages a small demonstration garden at the Port Orford Senior Center. The free program will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at the Coos Bay Public Library. Ewing will talk about different bins, materials needed and how to use it.

Rotary raises funds with cheese, wine
Bandon By-The-Sea Rotary is setting out the cheese, truffles and wine this weekend beckoning to the town's community minded.
The 15th-annual Wine and Cheese Extravaganza will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Best Western Inn at Face Rock, 3225 Beach Loop Drive.
Proceeds from the event benefit local Bandon projects, including student scholarships, donations to the local food bank, dictionaries for third graders and the Shoes for Kids program, along with international Rotary projects.
Tickets cost $35. The event will feature the wineries of Eola Hills Wine Cellars, the Brandborg Winery and a Casa Bruno distributor, who will pour some French and Italian wines. More than 50 international cheeses, hors d'oeuvres, desserts, Nora Thomason's hand-crafted chocolate truffles and a silent and live auction also will be featured. Two special auction items include a car and a 9.0 liter bottle of Ken Wright Pinot Noir.
Tickets are available from any Rotary member, at Tiffany's Drugs, Chetco Federal Credit Union, Bandon Mercantile and the Inn at Face Rock front desk.
