Youth compete in event to end hunger
Thursday, April 2, 2009 10:51 AM PDT

Five youth groups will compete in an event Saturday and Sunday in North Bend to build three-dimensional structures out of thousands of cans of food, kicking off Oregon Coast Community Action's Building to End Hunger.

The creations will be on display at the Pony Village Mall through April 30, with all the donated food going to hungry families, a press release said.

AmeriCorps volunteers are coordinating the service event that will involved Boy Scouts Troop 68, Girl Scouts Troop 30493, Coos County 4-H, the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon and students from North Bend High School's art class.

The event is designed in honor of Cesar Chavez, a civil rights activist who peacefully fought for the rights of farm and migrant workers.

The community will help select the best overall structure, with the four remaining structures winning Best Use of Theme, Most Complete Meal, Most Artistic, and Most Food Items Used. Winning structures will be announced April 20.

This activity is sponsored by Albertsons, Knights of Columbus, Grocery Outlet, Umpqua Bank, Bank of America, First Credit Union, the Coos Bay Elks Lodge; and supported through donations of time and expertise by Southwestern Oregon Community College professor Diana Schab, Tim Lambson of HGE, Drew Miller of Stutzner Engineering, Cedar Simmons and Michael Dees of the Dyer Partnership and Shannon Souza of SolCoast. Local restaurants also contributed support.
