A military base would aid economy

We could use military bases here for training. We have direct access to the Pacific Ocean. Military ships could be at sea within one hour or sooner. We could have a protected harbor — the largest protected harbor between San Francisco on the south and Seattle on the north. We already have an established airport that could be enlarged for larger military aircraft. We already have an established metal mill in Reedsport, which could be increased tenfold to supply the building of the bases and at the same time equal good paying jobs for our area.

For every student who enters our public schools and has a parent or guardian in the armed forces, the federal government or Department of Defense could contribute a certain amount of money to our school districts.

Homes would be purchased or rented, as would apartments. Thousands of jobs would be created via the industries that are here and added. Our channel and harbor worries would be over because of the many military ships based here, the Army Corps of Engineers would have to keep the channel and harbor open. The infrastructure of our cities, counties, roads and emergency personnel would be taken care of by the increase that would come as a result of having military bases in our community.

None of this is going to happen without the complete cooperation of managing entities of both North Bend and Coos Bay and the surrounding communities.

Remember, even though it doesn’t feel like it, we are at war. We most likely will be for the rest of our lives. There is a saying, “Those who hesitate are lost.” If it is expected that our federal government will take notice, we must speak as one entity.

Jack,

I KNOW all of that, I know the history. I know and understand and appreciate the role the Coast Guard has had and continues to have in the defense of this country. My statement was to indicate that the Coast Guard as it exists today in Oregon, specifically North Bend, would be, on their own, too small to provide much protection. Even if they had the CITRUS back, it wouldnt be much. What I said was more a function of numbers than intent.

Even better, how about building a nuclear power plant in Greenacres?

Jim,

I think you are not very informed about the Coast Guard. That is a slap in the face to every Coast Guardsman past and present. They have been a part of every war this Country has fought in. They have Cutters in Iraq right now. They lost men in Vietnam. WWII The CG captured Nazi spy's before the US even entered the war in Greenland.

Do a little research on the Coast Guard before you start making ill statements. They are a protective force.

The coast goard is NOT a protective force...are you kidding? Valuable, yes, but it's role is not as a protective force.

It would make sense to spread out our naval bases. Last time we DIDNT do that...well..Pearl Harbor comes to mind.

You could easily station a squadron of destroyers and/or submarines....

Joseph,

There is already a military base protecting the port. The US Coast Guard. Now I think the CG should move another Coos Bay is a great idea and I was pretty disappointed when the Citrus decommissioned and took around 120 people out of the area and I think the Port should off fought for a replacement ship to take up the empty pier space.

I do not see any Navy coming in any time soon with the huge cuts we are about to see to the DOD budget.
