Can Portland flights be saved?

Five candidates offer their solutions

What's new and central on the Coos County Airport District commissioners' minds is the crisis - low ridership on the North Bend-Portland flights.

The five people vying for two open seats on the airport commission say that's the biggest issue in their minds, too.

Making the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport self-sufficient - easing the burden on taxpayers - and better communication with the community are other challenges they want to tackle.

In one race are two Coos Bay residents - three-year incumbent and restaurateur Joe Benetti and Fred Kirby, a liquefied natural gas opponent, who ran for Coos Bay mayor in 2008 but withdrew his candidacy.

Three others are competing for a position Clair Jones will vacate. Business owner and pilot Patrick Elliott of North Bend, former airport board commissioner and Southwestern Oregon Community College treasurer Jon Barton of Hauser and airport budget committee member D. Stephen Pickering of Coos Bay.

Benetti wants to complete unfinished business. The board has been working with SkyWest Airlines to obtain better connections at the Portland International Airport hub.

"In my mind, it's not there yet, and it's something that needs to be dealt with," Benetti said.

Barton agrees commissioners should continue with their efforts and he'd like to help.

"It's critical that the airport muster every ounce of pressured persuasion it can to ensure that we retain and frankly improve the flight schedules to Portland," he said. "They are virtually the lifeline of this community."

Kirby said he's not happy with the current subsidy agreement between the airport district and SkyWest, which cost the airport $60,000 per month from November through January.

"I would rather cook up a deal with entrepreneur Ocean Air or the Sause Brothers/Coos Aviation team to provide reliable service from North Bend to Portland airport's business aviation section or to Eugene several times daily," Kirby said on his Web site, www.fredkirby.org.

Coos Aviation owner Dale Sause said he has been involved in discussions about fixed base operators at the airport providing the Portland service. Although it is viable, Sause isn't in favor of it.

"Do I prefer it - no," Sause said this morning. "But it's better than no air service."

He said it would be hard to move people and baggage when connecting from unsecured charter flights to commercial flights.

"When moving lots of people, it's not as good as commercial service," Sause said.

Elliott also would like to revisit SkyWest's agreement.

"That subsidy contract needs to be negotiated," Elliott said. "I think SkyWest has too much flexibility on changing their schedule."

Pickering said he would like the district to consider how to best serve the public.

"Bandon Dunes needs the airport ... but the current focus seems to be on golfers at the expense of the other 40,000-plus taxpayers in the district," he said.

All candidates suggested airport property, such as at the Airport Business Park, needs to be marketed more than it has in the past. Benetti recommended building more T-hangars for private airplane storage rentals and providing other routes besides Portland and San Francisco.

Kirby suggests the airport sell Business Park property, raise landing fees and further cut payroll. He'd like to see military displays and creation of flight clubs to engage the public in airport operations.

Elliott and Barton both said a professional Realtor should be hired to market airport properties. Barton has a detailed plan, including a public-private partnership to provide development money and management, and investment returns.

All of the candidates agreed there is room for improvement in the airport district's community relations.

Pickering would like to see money from paid parking fund a parking lot attendant's salary and security personnel. Currently, funds made through paid parking pay for airport operations.

Elliott said a new Coos County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program,  designed to provide customer service at the airport, is a step in the right direction.

"But it's not enough," he said.

"Airport management needs to be reminded they're a customer-facing organization," he said. "They need to sell their services."

Look at flights out of OTH after May 1 - under $300 to LA, Seattle, Chicago and a bunch of other spots. More importantly there are pretty good connections. Don't like the crazy 5 am flight but, Eugene has one at the same time that also gets a lot of usage. I did this on Expedia and went from a critic to at least tolerant of Sky West.

I've been trying all day to book a flight out of here after May 1, NOTHING LESS THAN $500. I think someone's pulling your leg. It ain't happening.

when we had horizon air they were always running specials, i used them 4 times a year to fly to portland and back, and it was reasonable. skywest is way out of the ball park when it comes to there airfares. they need to lower there prices and keep them low. i too am driving to portland in may to catch a flight for vacation and could not afford to pay the price for a round trip ticket from here to portland, its not rocket science. i also think that there was alot more to the story on horizon pulling out, they had been here forever and i cannot understand why we did not try to work with them so they would stay, so now we sit here with a huge new terminal and no one flying because skywest wont pull there head's out and get with the cheap flights.

Thank God for people like Joe Benetti. I am not sure who these other guys are, but just following their comments on this airport, THEY ARE NOT THE MEN FOR THE JOB. Why can't you get good service without raping the people of this county. It would be great to have service to other places besides Portland, and San Francisco. How about Los Angelas? Good Luck to you Joe Benetti, you are the one for the job, your track record speaks for itself.

If I recollect, Horizon bid on North Bound service to PDX, they wanted a subsidy of $1 million, skywest got it for about$700,000. My guess is in this economy Horizon would have cost us more.Bottom line Horizon does not want in this market and Skywest knows that

Face reality wrote on Apr 3, 2009 4:35 PM:

Horizon won't come back. They have upgraded their fleet to larger aircraft that are more than twice the size of the ones operated by Skywest. Subsidizing underutilized Skywest flights is bad, subsidizing Horizon’s larger planes would be devastating.

Steve Pickering wrote on Apr 3, 2009 12:02 AM:

Traveler. There is a bus 7 days a week. 5 days a week it is twice a day with good connections and convenient. The station is in the Tioga Hotel building. With a 14 day advance purchase it is $58.00 round trip to Portland. Takes about 6 hours total time each way with a couple of short layovers. Coos Bay to Reedsport to Florence, to Corvallis, to Salem, to Woodburn, to Portland, and reverse.

Tara wrote on Apr 2, 2009 7:48 PM:

I am 110% behind Mik. Let's get our trusted carrier back asap. Pay them what we're subsidizing that damn Skywest.

Heck, I'd take that older building back in a heartbeat if it meant reasonable, frequent PDX access on a friendly carrier again.

Traveling Dad wrote on Apr 2, 2009 4:51 PM:

Horizon abandoned us, quit dreaming.

I wish that someone would put in a bus of some kind for us people that need to go to Portland or even Eugene. It is to expensive to fly and with no other transportation, such as buses, it is hard for us seniors to leave town. We would love some kind of bus service so we can leave town sometimes.

Hardball wrote on Apr 2, 2009 7:02 AM:

Pickering, as usual, is vague and non-commital to anything other than creating a couple of minimum wage jobs for the parking lot. Perhaps Mr. Pickering himself would be best suited for a position as a parking lot attendant? He certainly isn't qualified for any position of authority!

Aren't we in danger of losing commercial air service now? If we the keep the incumbents it looks like it's gone.

I agree with The World's Editorial last night, and "Tired in Coos Bay", below, addressing Pickering's and Kirby's ideas regarding the Airport District. Non-brilliance at work, and, not good ideas boys. Join me in voting agaist these two problem solvers.

Joe B wrote on Mar 31, 2009 9:46 AM:

How about we just shut the airport down and create a very large homeless shelter for the citizens of Coos County. We could have a place for us to sleep when we squander all of the area's money. Then we could also save the money that we spend on Skywest.

Tired in Coos Bay wrote on Mar 31, 2009 9:01 AM:

I must voice my annoyance with Coos Bay's "perrenial" candidate, Fred Kirby. Who is this man? Does anybody know him? He declines to provide his age for the newspaper, and doesn't supply a picture. Why? Aside from his risible views on economic development in our community, it would finally be refreshing to meet Mr. Kirby in the light of day and feel a sense of true tranparency in his candidacy. Perhaps an actual appearance at a candidate night. I tire of his stealth campaign tactics and inchoate proselytizing.

Mr. Mojo Rising wrote on Mar 31, 2009 8:38 AM:

The ubiquitous Fred Kirby, aka James F. Kirby is back. I agree with Run Citizens on this one! Mr. Kirby professes corporate mgt. experience but we can assume from his proposed solutions to our air service problem that his resume was created in his own mind and not by his alleged experience. Assuming Mr. Kirby doesn't drop out of this race like he has in the last two, we once again respectfully request position titles, actual company names, dates of employement and verifiable references. Are you listsening Mr. Kirby?

Just An Observer wrote on Mar 30, 2009 7:54 PM:

Rather than expanding personnel, why not drop the parking fees altogether? Why build another bureaucratic empire Steve? Most people here would trust in the NBPD's presence being adequate to the task of security as well as the Homeland Security guys. No parking fees means no attendants are needed and that saves a TON of money as well as making for happier citizens who would not be stuck with a parking fee.

mik wrote on Mar 30, 2009 6:01 PM:

solve the problem-get rid of Skywest...get Horizon back...that worked for years. Pay Horizon what we are paying Skywest and get better service at a lower price...That's a no brainer...

RUN CITIZENS RUN wrote on Mar 30, 2009 5:44 PM:

No doubt there are UFOs in our area! Fred Kirby's brain has been sucked out of his head!

Our coummunity and its' citizens are at risk for losing the current air service that we fought for! How smug of Kirby to offer "cooking up a deal" with Ocean Air or Sause Brothers because he doesn't like the deal with Skywest.

CITIZENS BEWARE and get ready to RUN, RUN, RUN if brainless citizens who profess to be interested in your welfare get elected to this very, very important Board.

What would our community be like without commercial air service?

southbound wrote on Mar 30, 2009 4:54 PM:

Interesting development - ticket from OTH to Phoenix Az in April is over $320 with mediocre connections. In May with the schedule change I can fly for $250 with great connections - maybe things are looking up

Now if only a few more of these serial scamming good ole boys would get their just due.

I have my fingers crossed!

Maybe if the flights were more resonable more people would fly. However when they want $350 for a round trip ticket I can drive to Portland several times for that ammount! However I can fly from Portland to Texas for $200 round trip.

yes it can be saved wrote on Mar 30, 2009 10:41 AM:

When looking to the future, in this case, one needs to look at the past. Once there was a time when flights north were successful; perhaps a change in current flight availability needs to be looked at first.
