Coos County may see a recall election come May. The group campaigning to recall Commissioner Kevin Stufflebean turned in enough signatures to take the recall to voters.

Coos County Clerk Terri Turi said in a press release that elections workers finished verifying signatures on Friday.

Citizens for a Fair and Open Government gave the county 5,290 signatures on March 17. Of that amount, 4,747 — about 90 percent — were accepted. The group needed 3,773 signatures of active, registered Coos County voters to trigger a recall election.

“We’re pretty happy — glad to be past this part,” recall leader Larry Van Elsberg said Friday.

Signature verification does not mean an election is certain. Stufflebean has until April 1 to either resign or submit a letter explaining why he should keep his seat. If he does not resign, the election will be held May 5.

Van Elsberg said he doesn’t expect Stufflebean’s resignation.

“I’m sure it’s going to be a fight,” he said. Van Elsberg, the former county roadmaster, is leading laid-off Road Department employees in the recall effort.

Stufflebean was on his way home from meetings in Salem Friday and was not available for comment by press time.

Kevin has broke no laws, he has saved the county money, he goes to Washington DC to try and get our county money... He does this by caring for our county, giving up family time, and a cut in pay from his previous job to serve us, coos county taxpayers... hmmm how many of you would be willing to sacrafice those things for the good of others... is Kevin perfect, no, but how many of us are, how many of us would be willing to make the hard and unpopular decisions... not many.... Thank you Kevin and his family for everything that you have done for US!

The people of Coos County have spoken....the recall has more to do with Stufflebean's underhanded ways of conducting business....not the layed of workers....it you stayed more informed some fo those workers will be coming back! Kevin Stufflebean is not qualified or does he deserve to hold any government office!

This whole thing makes me sick. We had to either get rid of people and be able to afford the materials for the remaining staff to actually work, or keep everybody and let them hang out because we couldn't afford materials. The whole country is cutting back, it sucks...but grow up people!!

I think Kevin has done what he has been hired to do.Hold county governmentto a minimum. The whole country is laying off employees and Government should not be exempt.Stay the course Kevin.I feel the voters will make a showing and support you.We will also hold you accountable for the next 2 years to make the necessary adjustments in government.
