Recall group reaches target

Coos County may see a recall election come May. The group campaigning to recall Commissioner Kevin Stufflebean turned in enough signatures to take the recall to voters.
Coos County Clerk Terri Turi said in a press release that elections workers finished verifying signatures on Friday.
Citizens for a Fair and Open Government gave the county 5,290 signatures on March 17. Of that amount, 4,747 — about 90 percent — were accepted. The group needed 3,773 signatures of active, registered Coos County voters to trigger a recall election.
“We’re pretty happy — glad to be past this part,” recall leader Larry Van Elsberg said Friday.
Signature verification does not mean an election is certain. Stufflebean has until April 1 to either resign or submit a letter explaining why he should keep his seat. If he does not resign, the election will be held May 5.
Van Elsberg said he doesn’t expect Stufflebean’s resignation.
“I’m sure it’s going to be a fight,” he said. Van Elsberg, the former county roadmaster, is leading laid-off Road Department employees in the recall effort.
Stufflebean was on his way home from meetings in Salem Friday and was not available for comment by press time.
