Michael Donowa of Myrtle Point powered his way over the brutal hills between Coos Bay and North Bend to win the overall championship at the South Coast Running Club’s Run of Two Cities last Saturday.

Donowa scorched the hilly 10-kilometer course in 36 minutes and 20 seconds, the fastest time in at least the past 10 years, to dethrone two-time defending champion Mark Gagnon of Coos Bay. Gagnon finished in a very respectable 42:30 to take third, also behind Joseph Rodriguez of Coos Bay (41:52).

The women were led by Liza Holland of Coos Bay, who was 14th overall in 52:26. She was followed by Laurie Sevier of North Bend (53:36) and Barbara Young of Coos Bay (55:19).

Matthew Walker of North Bend won the equally difficult 5-kilometer run/walk in 23:18. In second was Lisa Link of North Bend, the women’s champion (33:47), with third going to Toni Espy of Coos Bay (39:44).

All entry fees from the event were donated to South Coast Special Olympics.
