A regional economist said Coos County hasn't seen a February unemployment rate higher than this year's in more than two decades.

The latest South Coast labor statistics released Monday by the regional Oregon Employment Department indicate Coos County's unemployment rate rose more than 1 percent between January and February. It now stands at 13.8 percent, up from 12.7 percent the previous month. Last February, the unemployment rate stood at 7.8 percent.

The last time Coos County's unemployment rate was higher in February was 1985, when it was 15.4 percent, said department economist Guy Tauer.

Tauer thinks the economy will have to bottom out before consumers begin spending again. Once that happens, businesses could start hiring again.

"We've just been in this hunker-down mentality," Tauer said. "We've been bombarded with negative economic news."

Curry County's unemployment rate climbed from 13.8 to 14.9 percent in the same month. Its unemployment rate was 7.9 percent a year ago. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate went from 11.2 percent to 12.5 percent between January and February. The county saw a decline of 220 payroll jobs, a 3.3 percent loss over the year, with both construction and manufacturing sectors declining by about 12 percent over the year.

Oregon's statewide unemployment rate also shot up a full percentage point to 10.8 percent last month, the highest rate since July 1983, and well ahead of the national rate of 8.1 percent.

"We should not feel singled out in our malaise," Tauer stated in a press release. "Oregon statewide has seen a doubling of its unemployment rate and the estimated number of unemployed over the past year."

Tauer said January through March is typically the slowest time for businesses.

"It tends to be the highest unemployment rates of the year," he said.

In Coos County, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose from 11.2 percent in January to 12.4 percent in February. Total payroll employment fell by 400 jobs over the year. The construction and manufacturing sectors suffered the biggest losses, with over-the-year declines of 130 jobs each, 11 percent and 13 percent, respectively. Losses in each of these sectors in February were slight, however, with construction dropping 20 jobs, and no losses in manufacturing.

Wood products-related businesses, the majority of which are sawmills, dropped 90 jobs during the year from February to February.

Although retail businesses shed 20 jobs in February, they added 40 over the year. The trend went the opposite direction for the tourism-reliant leisure and hospitality sector, which gained 20 jobs in February, but lost 110 jobs over the past year.

"It's a combination of less tourism as well as people who live here spending less in restaurants," Tauer said.

Over the year, government employment trends were mixed in Coos County. Preliminary estimates showed state and local government jobs declined by 20 and 40 jobs, respectively, whereas federal jobs increased by 30.

The number of unemployed people who are seeking jobs rose from 3,651 to 4,044 between January and February in Coos County. These are not only people who have filed unemployment insurance claims, but individuals who are not employed, are available for work and have made specific attempts to find a job in the prior four weeks, according to www.QualityInfo.org, an Employment Department Web site.

The numbers can be deceiving, since the civilian labor force also rose from 28,809 to 29,302. The labor force fluctuates throughout the year, according to Debbie Sargent, supervisor with Business & Employment Services. She said things that can influence this number include factors such as the U.S. Coast Guard returning from deployment.

all these unemployed people, and I can't find someone to properly clean my house for less than a king's ransom?

I am also having a hard time to get a handyman to clean the roof from moss and the gutters. The last guy I called wanted 250.00 to 300.00. He would have probably driven up in a Beamer. And I thought construction and similar businesses were in trouble???

Reaganomics. For 30 years the republicans have been helping the rich get richer. In the last 8 bush years that consolidation of wealth has been in overdrive. Now they have so much money that there's none left for the middle class. Now we have a man that has talked about reversing that and has been showing he keeps his promise. A man working tirelessly for the middle class. It's so sad that people don't know the truth.

Yea! Now that the employment rate is 13.8%, employers can abuse employees as much as they want. If they don't like like it, they should get over it or get walking and let someone else take their job! (See comments on assessors office suit)

WEED IS NOT DOPE it is for people that have PAIN..That can't afford Health Care. METH IS DOPE!! I See a BIG DIFFERENCE. I have NO USE for METH HEADS. I think they all should crawl in a HOLE! THEY ARE VERY FREAKY PEOPLE. Unlike us laid back WEED Smokers. So if you call WEED DOPE... I sure hope you don't have to take any medication,Cause that is DOPE to. With all the side affects they Hurt ya more then they HELP ya.

Bring Back Our Jobs..Thank You :) Last time I worked in a Factory they had offices. Which means if working up a sweat is to hard for you. You can sit at a desk and do paper work. So why would some be left out? Making WEED LEGAL would HELP the ECONOMY all the WAY AROUND. IF our Local & State Gov's would let Industry come in without TAXING the CRAP out of them. Then MAYBE JUST MAYBE Oregon could turn around.

Bring our jobs back wrote on Mar 26, 2009 9:24 AM:

Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah! If you want to point a finger, point it at yourself! If y'all didn't shop at Wal-Mart, we might still have a few small businesses around.

Do you prefer to support China, Mexico, and other countries instead of your own? If not, do something. Write Obam and tell him to pull out of the NAFTA and WTO agreements.

Also, be prepared to pay more for products made in the USA but do it with a smile because it is supporting a job. The more people working, the less on welfare. Also, the more tax dollars collected, the closer we get to chipping away at our debt. Let's not leave this mess for our kids!

One last thought - all work visas for non-resident aliens need to be pulled. Any jobs created need to be filled by American citizens.

TAS - you said it well!

HUH wrote on Mar 26, 2009 8:52 AM:

I would just like to ask the one person who thinks that making weed legal would help the job economy? And not everyone has the skills to do factory work. I agree, blaming it on the rumors of what might be coming to the area is not a viable option. Because even then, not a lot of people are going to get the jobs.

blame others wrote on Mar 25, 2009 8:53 AM:

I love how it is always the DEMS fault or the REPULICANS fault. You people have so many excuses. It wasn't the elephants or the jack-ass that had home depot pull out of both North Bend and Coos Bay. Was it either one of there faults when the Costco rumors finally dwindled to a nothing, or better yet the Olive Garden. This has been a issue that has been going on for years and years in the county but we always find someone else to blame besides ourselves.
The opportunities have been there, we just as a community decided against them. So now we wait for the next big company to promise tons of jobs but you know what? We'll just pass it along, we don't need that we have a WAL-MART and a Casin.....right?

TAS wrote on Mar 25, 2009 8:13 AM:

MAKE WEED LEGAL! This would HELP the Economy in Oregon that EVERYONE is WHINING about. Oregon is SPENDING Way to much money FIGHTING the Growth of WEED. That money could go to other Resources. LIKE OUR Schools and Health Care. Plus it would put the MEXICAN Cartel out of BUSINESS. It's Oregon fault for Giving out so many Drivers Lic.. Has anyone tried to renew their Lic. YET! BE prepared you need all kinds of ID now just to RENEW.

TAS wrote on Mar 25, 2009 7:52 AM:

They did raise the Minimum wage at the first of the year. Yes they have raised the Cig. tax. and taxed anyone making over $250,000 a year. The DEMS haven't put us where we are today. Thank you BUSH for that. Now we have a new President everyone is BLAMING him. Hell he has done more in the couple of months then Bush did the whole time he was in office. I think all you RED NECK Bible Thumping REPUBLICANS Need to quit WHINING!! I do AGREE we need NEW PEOPLE in our State Capital.

I was told by an upper echelon official at the Oregon Employment Department to double whatever number they release for Coos County and that would be the real number.

26% sounds more like a real number of unemployment in Coos County.

When your largest employers number 3, you have serious problems galore when the top 3 only pay minimum wage for 90% of their workforce.

ESpitole wrote on Mar 24, 2009 9:39 PM:

First, other than logging and commercial fishing, we must identify what skills we have to offer as a community. Then somebody being paid the big bucks to create jobs here must get out of their chair and office. Locate the large manufacturing companies who are feeling the pressure to return manufacturing jobs to the US who are presently sending work that we could do out of the US and team with them. Also, most aerospace prime contractors are desperately seeking Native American owned companies to manufature "build to print" assemblies. This could employ hundreds.

Dave wrote on Mar 24, 2009 8:27 PM:

As long as Oregon is ANTI-EVERYTHING no one will come here to start a buisness. The Governor is the worst one we've had since John Kiskshaber . They seem like the same. The people in this county are working themselves out of business. You could try to relocate Heaven here and the usual mob would oppose THAT. So it's back to taking in each other's laundry for a business. It's probably a moot point anyhow. Congress and the President are quickly financially destroying the entire country. Just remember to be nice to the Chinese officer in the UN peacekeeping force when he comes around to inspect your house.

Seems to me that every time some industry or whatever tries to come into the Coos County area, all of you do gooder inviromentilist have something to say about it. Kinda like the spotted owl issue. AFTER most of the mills in the County had to shut down, THEN the inviromental wackoos determined that the poor little owl could live somewhere else.
Well I say the same to you people, if you don't like what is going on around the county, then YOU move somewhere else, and the sooner the better.

Then you wonder why the unemployment is so high in Coos County. YOU are the ones that ran all the jobs out of the county, and YOU are the ones that is keeping new industry from comming in here.

Why don't we vote to raise minimum wage? Then we can bridge the gap between the middle and lower class. Then people with degrees will make a similar wage as those with no degree, and they can ask for more money due to the cost of living, then the Union can increase their dues for fighting to get them higher pay. Then everyone can bump to a higher tax bracket to help the State. Does anybody like to play dominoes?

How about a Container Port, Pellet Manufacturing, Alternative Energy Experimentation and Manufacturing, Return to Ship Building, Convention and Event Center, Aqua Culture Seafood Farming (not sure about this one as I seem to remember there is some sort of parasite issue), Natural Gas Mining, Chromites and Garnet production, and with the skills we have here why not Rail Car Manufacturing and Maintenance?
