Bandon’s Cole Scherer had what might be the best throw in history for Class 3A since the new javelin was implemented in 2002
Scherer had a throw of 202 feet, 3 inches in the Small Schools Invitational at Bandon, which is better than any Class 3A throws in the past five years according to the track and field Web site
www.athletic.net.
Bandon won both team races, with the Tigers edging Reedsport 139-135 for the boys title. Bandon’s girls scored 206 points to easily beat the runner-up Braves, who had 153. Coquille, Gold Beach and Pacific also participated in the meet.
Among the other top marks, Reedsport’s Ismael Osorio had a throw of 146-6 to win the discus and Gold Beach’s Logan Hockema had a mark of 46-0 in the shot put.
Miles Bernadett-Peters won both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters for Gold Beach, while Cory Christoffersen won both hurdles races for Reedsport.
For the girls, Sydney Snook of Gold Beach had strong opening-meet times of 5:01.12 in the 1,500 and 2:27.60 in the 800 while easily winning both events.
Ashton Mann won the 100, 200 and long jump for Reedsport, while teammate Lindsey Wright won the pole vault and high jump.
Jesse Culley won the shot put and discus for Pacific, with an impressive effort of 34-5 in the shot put.
BASEBALLBulldogs blast LionsBryce Weidman threw a one-hitter for North Bend, Cameron Seiger drilled a three-run home run in the third and the Bulldogs rolled to an 11-1 road win over Cottage Grove in five innings Wednesday.
“It was nice to play a game. Bryce pitched well, and it was nice to see our bats come alive and put the bat on the ball for five innings,” said North bend coach Brad Horning.
The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 in the third before Seiger’s home run gave them the lead for good. Seiger finished the game 2-for-2 from the plate, with two runs scored and three RBIs. Dalton Iveans went 3-for-4 hitting, with two runs scored, four RBIs and a pair of doubles.
Weidman pitched all five innings, walking one batter, hitting two and striking out three. The Lions’ lone run was unearned.
SOFTBALLNorth Bend stomps BobcatsNorth Bend used a 13-run first inning to put Myrtle Point away for good in a 20-5 blowout win in five innings at home Wednesday.
Bulldog Melissa Swagerty got on base on each of her five batting attempts in the game, going 3-for-5 from the plate and walking twice. Four North Bend players scored four runs in the game, as the Bulldogs scored 20 runs on just six hits.
Lorin Crossman got the win on the mound for North Bend, pitching all five innings and racking up four strikeouts with just one walk and allowing two hits.
“She had a pretty good game. She’s been pitching real well for us,” said Bulldogs coach David Johnson.
The only low spot for North Bend was in the error department, but the Bulldogs’ five was still better than the Bobcats’ six.
“We definitely had more errors than I would be happy with,” Johnson said.
Myrtle Point freshman Morgan Bouska, the team’s starting pitcher, has converted from a right-handed pitcher to throwing left handed in the last month after a broken wrist from volleyball season didn’t heal properly.
“It just shows what a phenomenal athlete she is, to not only physically be able to make the transition and do what she’s doing, but to mentally keep the composure,”said Bobcat coach John Marquez. “She’s one of our leaders.”
Johnson was impressed.
“That was pretty impressive for what she did left-handed,”he said.
Taunoka Foster had an RBI double for the Bobcats in the first inning, when Myrtle Point scored four runs, and Megan Geer added a double later in the game.
