Coos Bay police arrested a Coquille police officer Wednesday on charges of attempted contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor and furnishing alcohol to a minor.

At about 7:15 a.m., a citizen called police with a complaint alleging officer James Bryant gave alcohol to a teenage girl and solicited another to engage in a sexual act sometime between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

Coquille police called Coos Bay Police Department to conduct the investigation into the incident, which reportedly took place in Coos Bay. After an investigation, officers arrested Bryant, an eight-year Coquille police veteran, and took him to Coos County jail, where he was booked and released.

Coquille Police Chief Mark Dannels said he placed Bryant on administrative leave Wednesday night.

The identified female victims at this time include a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old.

Bryant is the second Coquille police officer to be arrested in the past six months. Former police officer Randy Ulmer pleaded guilty to stealing at least $8,500 from the evidence locker at Coquille Police Department. He began serving a 20-day jail sentence Wednesday.

I hope some day we will stop trying to incriminate eachother for every little thing and learn to take responsibilty and for our own actions and forgive the actions of others.

Okay first of all, reread my comment. I didn't say that he did what he is accused of. I said if he did this he should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Secondly, at what age do victims become perpetrators? If we teach them that they have no accountability when they are minors how are we to expect them to accept responsibility and be held accountable when they are older? These girls are 17 and 18. Yes, they made a stupid choice to drink, but a choice nonetheless. If they had gotten in a car and killed someone after they had been drinking I doubt the public would see them as "innocent."

I am in NO WAY condoning what Jimmy is accused of doing, if in fact he did it. But I happen to agree with Amelia in this case. I was a teenage girl once too. At high school age you know what is right and what is wrong...whether you have alcohol or not. Which, by the way, is also illegal. These girls need MIPs at the very least. They knew it was illegal to drink and to have sex with an adult. He needs the book thrown at him but so do these girls. Its disgusting!

Amelia wrote on Mar 26, 2009 8:39 AM:

What do these girls do? consent to sex with someone older and then call in and report it? This little game diminishes the claim of forced rape.

He may be guilty but so is she. Once a girl (or boy) reaches high school age, if they CONSENT to sex with an older person there should be punishment for both for breaking the law. If all these girls wanted is to have sex, they would choose someone under 18.

These girls need to be charged with having consensual sex before the age of consent and put on probation. They need to sit in on a victims panel of women who have been forced to have sex, often under very violent conditions. We need to teach them the difference between forced rape and choice or consent. It is obvious by the news these days that their parents are not teaching them!

He is a police officer, a civil servant assigned to protect and serve the community of Coquille. During one of his arrests a man was paralyzed. Coquille residents deserve a police officer who has respect for the residents and will not abuse his authority. They deserve to have an officer they can trust. If there is any reason to think otherwise, it needs to be taken seriously. Remember, this is the man who has been given the authority to arrest you.

COMMUNITY SERVICE wrote on Mar 19, 2009 5:23 PM:

So to all you whiners out there, that's complaining about not enough cops to look after the vacant beds in county jail, here's a solution. It appears they will have plenty of cops in jail before long,so they should be able to watch 24 7. as they will be incarserated also.Kind of like community service,if you know what I mean.We just need to get the DA to prosecute all the charges allowed, instead of picking just one.

Chris wrote on Mar 19, 2009 5:22 PM:

I know nothing of the new Chief, but it appears he did nothing to bring this forward, it was the complaint of a citizen. As far as Officer Bryants charges, I can't believe it, I am a good friend of his and know him to be a devote father and good friend. Why is everyone so quick to assume he is guilty anyhow?? what ever happened until innocent until proven guilty?! And how many of you leaving comments about Officer Bryant have received a citation from him?? Not saying that it is true all the time, but usually when you see the Red & Blues in the rearview, it means you have done something wrong!!! I wish Officer Bryant and his family the best in getting through this. Again, INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY!!!!!

Another Coquille corrupt police officer, I was wondering when they would catch him, what goes around comes back and bites you. He intimidated you when you were pulled over, lock him up and throw the key away.
Thank you Chief Dannels for getting the Coos Bay Police involved in the case and we all have trust in you.
Concerned citizens of Coquille had very good complaints in the past year.

I am getting REALLLLLY tired of the new chief getting praised for everything. This stuff all just "happened to happen" in the past few months. It does not mean Chief Dannels is spectacular...it just means it happened, period.

Nor does it mean that the PD as it was before him never did anything right. It is just so silly to make it sound like the new chief is responsible for cleaning up Coquille, when Coquille is the same.

Maybe the new chief is responsible for bringing the bad luck here in the first place...not really! I'm just saying it's rediculous to praise him for catching all the bad guys when that's just the way things happened. They would have all been caught no matter who was chief, and we all know they have been trying to get rid of Bryant for years. It was the union that kept him on the job, remember????

In my opinion, Mr. Dannels is out of the office tooooo much and should be watching his budget a little more closely.

Let's all give this town a break, OK? Pontificating prejudices from folks like Portland have no place here. Perhaps The World needs to change their "blog" to something more civil like the local TV station has, through named folks who must log on and have some known responsibility for their comments. Personally, I'm fed up the all the anonymous trash talking that The World permits here. It only serves to inflame. Shame on The World.

Great work Chief Dannels. I am glad that you do not care what a persons last name is, for years if you had the right last name around here, you could get away with most anything. THANK YOU for NOT being that way.

You are great and is just what Coquille has needed for years. Keep up the great work.

Maybe Randy and Jimmy can share cells and then we can keep the cost down.

THIS is the reason your town has problems. I've heard the kids talk about this cops' 'fondness' for young girls for years now.

People like you ARE the reason Coquille has the rep.

To all of the haters who bash on Coquille and all think you live in a crime free nirvana. Where do you live? what towns are as crime free as Coquille?
we have had 2 murders in 10 years. How many has your town had?? Some robbery's. Crooked cops, gross teachers. Big deal your towns have had all of the same crimes if not worse...I think its cute all of the people are outraged about minor crimes here. It just proves my point this town has been very safe and still is.

Did you even read the news article? The investigation is being handled by Coos Bay PD, where the incident happened. Besides the PD has to respond to every call that comes in.
As far as what is going on in this town, yea we may have been making the news lately for all of the bad stuff, but I would still move back here any day of the week. I was born and raised here and moved back with my children. Just because all the idiots are making the rest of us law abiding citizens look bad. Go Coquille we will overcome all the bad press and rise above to shine once again.

Chief-I am very impressed with the clean-up of corrupt individuals in Coquille. Criminals from all walks of life! I have been disgusted for many years that people here have been getting away with their crimes. You are doing a fantastic job!
I only wish you could get these old unsolved murders solved.

LAUGH ALL YOU WANT wrote on Mar 19, 2009 12:51 PM:

Coquille has been in the news a lot lately for things that are not really flattering. That does not negate the fact that 90% of the people here are really great people. Many people give minors alcohol all the time, and it is never reported. That is the main reason that we have a lot of the MIP problems around here. If everyone would shape up, it would be great.

The happenings in Coquille are a positive series of events. Have you noticed in the past months major crimes have happened in Coquille there has been agressive response from Chief Dannels and his staff. Two officers recently were discovered to have dishonored their oath of office and they were removed. I am thankful "the good old boy" politics are not at work in Coquille. Thank you Chief Dannels for your hard work and dealing with difficult situations with decisiveness and resolve. Thanks for making our city an even better place to live!

I for one am sorry you have had to deal with so many of these issues. They say that power corrupts and it seems to have been running that way for a while there. I sure hope that the new chief will get things in order and get your city out of the news soon.

To this officer, if this is true you should get a public flogging!

All the pro-cop people who attacked the Coquille people standing up to the CPD in the past years now have a lot of egg on their faces. The new chief comes in, the group in Coquille that was up in arms over bad cops is seemingly happy with that new chief and the bad apples are being cleaned out of Coquille's bin.

Kudos to the chief for getting the job done and making the citizens happy. Sorry to read about things like the robbery at Safeway coming your way too. There may be hope for some sort of professionalism regarding police work in Coquille after all.

Once the mess is cleaned up, look for fewer bad stories coming out of Coquille. Good cops patrolling effectively and professionally will keep down both crime and complaints.

Before everyone starts saying what the heck is up with Coguille think about it. They have a new police chief and now the bad ones are getting cought. These cops (and other criminals) have probably been getting away with these things for years they are just getting in trouble now.

Ps hopefully this one will get a better sentence and no (none whats so ever) special treatment

Dismayed wrote on Mar 19, 2009 12:04 PM:

I think that most citizens feel our law enforcement officers should be held to a higher standard of conduct,
i.e., "exemplary in obeying the law". The concept of empowering one citizen to arrest another is based on trust in the policing power. "To whom much is given, much is required". It's a tragedy
when that trust is breeched.
