Sunday’s blustery weather played havoc with drivers when a number of fallen trees and mudslides blocked area roadways.

A rock slide that closed state Highway 126, 8 miles west of Walton on Sunday and still was blocking the highway this morning.

Drivers were told to use Highway 38 as an alternate route from Interstate 5 to the coast until the road re-opened around 10:30 this morning.

An Oregon Department of Transportation geotechnical engineer examined the slide area and deemed it stable. ODOT spokesman Jared Castle said the slide is in an area that frequently has debris flows after heavy rains.

“The ground couldn’t handle the saturation,” Castle said.

Reedsport area

According to the Reedsport police log, at about 5:27 a.m., a mudslide and a fallen tree blocked traffic in the 2200 block of Smith River Road. A tree, 2 inches in diameter, had hit a Verizon telephone line.

An officer responded to the scene until the Douglas County Road Department arrived. The tree and mud were cleared by 6:30 a.m., the log said.

At 8:08 a.m. a 911 caller reported a transformer had exploded in the 2000 block of Longwood Avenue, according to the Reedsport police log. A Reedsport Volunteer Fire Department spokesman said a branch had fallen across a power line, causing the transformer to blow. The rain put out the fire. A firefighter blocked traffic for a short time when a Central Lincoln Public Utility District worker removed the branch, he said.

At about 1:42 p.m., a mud slide was reported in the 9000 block of Loon Lake Road. According to a Douglas County press log, the slide covered three-quarters of the inside lane. The road department and public works department responded.

North Bend

At 9:07 a.m. , near the corner of 17th and Fir streets in North Bend, a tree fell into the power lines and blocked one lane of traffic at Lakeshore Drive and Hayes. The North Bend Street Department responded, but by the time crews arrived the tree had been cut by a Pacific Power crew and moved aside, street department manager Bob Dillard said.

At 4:35 p.m., a tree toppled on Alder Ridge Drive, blocking the North Bend street. A street department crew responded, and cleared the road, Dillard said.

More rain is likely through tonight, according to the National Weather Service, with a chance of rain showers throughout the day on Tuesday, although winds have decreased. The forecast calls for a breezy day today with winds at 15 to 25 mph, with southwest winds decreasing to 10 to 15 mph on Tuesday.

Coos Bay

At 8:47 p.m. Friday, a caller reported that water was all the way across the roadway in the 1700 block of Iowa Avenue in Coos Bay, according to the Coos Bay police log.

Rob Schab, general manager of Coos Bay-North Bend Waterboard said a fitting had come loose on a 2-inch line, which took a waterboard crew about two hours to repair.
